Recruiting (on paper) has gone well.

So it can be one of three things:

1. Lack of development

2. Poor scouting

3. Combination of 1 and 2.


All of this in on Austin.

Isn't this just his second year as O-line coach?
Usually these guys take a few years to get going, so I'm not certain we know how he's doing just yet.

And... to be honest our offensive lines have been 'meh' for just about as long as I can remember when it comes to short line yardage.

But it seems like that is all the more reason to nail the hire. Go grab literally any available Alabama/UGA/Arkansas (Pittman) OL coach and make sure he gets asked “tell me what you would do better with these guys” and hire the guy that has the most specific answer.

I can’t help but recall the Austin quote right after the Riley hire and he said something like “inside zone is inside zone”—seemingly to downplay the importance of the play call/scheme. The problem in front of him is effort and execution and I just don’t see that getting better week over week. I’m waiting to be wrong though.

It's gone on so consistently that I think it's intentional.
Not that they want to be BAD, obviously. But they simply prioritize other things.

It seems to me they want versatile players, who can fill different roles. Nothing wrong with that, but that makes them more generalists vs. knowing and playing one position. Also, it seems like they want more mobile guys given our RPO offensive base.
That works well when we're spreading people out in space and they can get a body on someone in space... but doesn't work so well on short yardage or goal line.

I guess I say all that to say, I'm not convinced it's Austin's fault. It's just that road grading with the o-line is... not what we do.
*shrugs*

But what do I know?

Seems like every team we play can get 1 or 2 yards against our really talented DL.

We can't get an push at all and often lose yardage up the middle.

Pass blocking seems decent. Problem is that they can't seem to get any push in the interior running game.

I mean, truthfully, are you not seeing the same thing?
