James Davis hired by Clemson as a coach

16

Jul 12, 2023, 8:27 AM

I haven’t seen any articles or posts on here but James has apparently been hired on as a coach at Clemson. Not sure what role?

He has reposted this Instagram announcement in his stories.

I know CJ Spiller was a fan favorite, but James Davis was my favorite.
Glad to see him back with the program.

Me too! Davis was the heart of the team. First Clemson jersey I bought was a #1 jersey for JD…but I was also a lady in college at that time so I could pull it off lol

Great to hear! Favorite of mine too. Still remember the video of him with tears in his eyes being interviewed after practice when Tommy Bowden was fired. Glad he is back home!

Literally was going to type the same thing. I remember his video like it was yesterday and my heart truly broke for him. However, I’m sure he will agree that it all worked out. He was a true leader that’s for sure

What I remember most about Davis and Bowden...

Jul 12, 2023, 10:00 AM [ in reply to Re: James Davis hired by Clemson as a coach ]

was how Davis (and CJ Spiller) were both grossly underutilized in the 2006 Music City Bowl game against Kentucky.

Kentucky had the 110th ranked rush defense in the country and Clemson had two of the nations top RBs in James Davis and CJ Spiller.

Davis and Spiller had a combined 13 carries for 74 yards in that game (13 friggin' carries against one of the nations worst defenses). Rob Spence and Tommy Bowden should have both been fired after that game.

No doubt. They got wayyyyy toooo cute with all the bubble screens. I was so mad at our coaches during and after that fiasco of a game.

I was sitting in a section mostly filled with Kentucky fans. None of them came to that game expecting to win. They (as I, and everybody else) expected Davis and Spiller to run all over them, but as the game wore on, all of us were more and more dumbfounded by that utter squandering of Clemson's obvious advantage. I normally get over losses pretty quickly, but that one still bothers me when I think about it.

JD and CJ were the first of tandem running backs. Just think what their stats would have been if they had been solo backs.

Class of ‘71. Went through “rat season” and glad I did.

When CJ was a freshman he used the moniker “Thunder and Lightning” but that was already in use by some other running back tandem at the time. I kinda wished they had used “Boom and Zoom”

There was a little bit of a falling out when his brother went to Scar and he made some comments but looks like he’s ready to come home.

I’m guessing he’s being hired as a QC guy.

James Davis is a Clemson icon. Few newer fans will understand.

Jul 12, 2023, 12:48 PM

This man was head and shoulders above our recruiting level at this time, and was all but assured several years of being THE man at Clemson, but he still turned around and actively supported the recruiting of CJ…just one year behind him…knowing that at best he would have to split reps with him. If he’s coming back to coach at Clemson, I’m thrilled for him.

My memory may be failing, but seems like JD was the first of the guys that introduced the element that is our current culture of players selfishly recruiting their own position for the greater good of the team. Even if I am mistaken, JD was a good guy and I'm glad he's back.

Our RB recruiting is improving. This might give it a boost.
Student Asst. coach. That's kinda vague. Kudos to the young man for coming back to school. You make us proud. James

I remember in 2007 when Ralph ‘ate the’ Friedgen

Said that Maryland expected to beat Clemson despite being hampered by injuries. Coaches words didn’t set well with James Davis and James “Guaranteed” a victory vs Maryland. James had a great game with something like 120 yards rushing and Clemson handily beat Maryland.

To this day I still call a sure thing a “James Davis Guarantee”
