to move to the Slot and Mafah to number 1 running back. That gets 2 of the best players on the team involved in every play..... just a thought.

Did you make a stop at Sloan Street Tap Room yesterday LBB? I love to get some "Jimmyisms" before games along with $6 pitchers of Natty Light!

Don’t think he will transfer because will still be part of the starting game plan, but he will be on a shorter leash as far as his production.

I think this will drive more 21 personnel and more snaps for Mafah even in single back sets. That’s my prediction.

I just think ship needs to get back to that punishing runner mindset…. He used to give a hit, and for whatever reason, seems to absorb hits now, or braces himself for a hit, rather than dish it out….
I am hopeful he gets that attitude back……..

Time for Shipley to heal a minute

These guys will suck up the small injuries, most football players do. But-- have enough small injuries and you become hesitant to bring hit after hit after hit, game after game after game.
Even tough mf's need a break to heal.

Shipley has skills that Mafah doesn’t, and vice versa.
Mafah doesn’t find the small interior line cracks that are all too frequently the only ‘holes’ that we create with our OL. Shipley is very quick & instinctive when hitting these holes. True, he typically only gets 2 or 3 yards when squeezing into these holes. (Neither Shipley nor Mafah nor ND’s Estime makes yardage through the interior when no hole exists.)
Mafah, surprisingly evident for a long while, opportunistically bounces the run outside better than Shipley.
Shipley is just a bit faster than Mafah when the running play is designed to go outside the tackle box.
Shipley can break tackles, but, as we all witnessed again and again yesterday, nothing like how Mafah breaks tackles and yet still maintaining his balance.
Shipley is marginally better as a receiver than Mafah, although both comparably catch the balls that ~ hit their hands. Shipley is a bit faster and shiftier than Mafah; this expands Shipley’s usefulness in the passing game beyond that which Mafah can provide.
IMO, when pass blocking assignments don’t get mixed up (blown), Mafah is a better at pass pro than Shipley. (Thank goodness that Shipley has become good enough in pass pro this year; he was awful as a FR and bad as a SO.)
All of this is to say that there is strength in having top quality RBs that have different skills, yet both are effective throughout the range of RB tasks that they are expected to perform. In the ideal situation, both Mafah and Shipley will get ~ 20 touches per game. Quadzilla showed everyone that he is a genuine asset in certain situations when between-the-tackle runs are necessary. I believe that Quadzilla is our very best RB for short and goal -&- fourth and short situations; I’d have D.Thomas as Option #1 in these situations.

I watched Phil have the game of his life and still fumble at a very bad time yesterday. Phil’s fumble against South Carolina last year on the kickoff turned that game around. Turnovers haven’t been bound to just one player.
