Patrick Sr. was a full size man, reasonably fast, but not especially shifty QB with a strong arm; neither great nor terrible accuracy as a passer.

Patrick Sr. was supplanted at QB by a true freshman (Nealon Greene) who was a smaller, shiftier guy with a weaker arm but also a bit of better touch on his passes than Patrick Sr.

Patrick Sr. was too good of an athlete to languish on the bench as backup QB. He agreed to give it a shot as LB, where he excelled … especially as a pass rusher.
