So much to digest here. The fact remains that 98% of college football players won’t play in the NFL. Dabo has always had a goal of helping these players get an education and degree so they are prepared for life after football. Now there seem to be players whose motivation is to make a lifetime worth of earnings playing college football for 3-5 years so they don’t have to worry about income the rest of their lives. If that is their goal, an education isn’t important to those players. There are very few occupations where this is possible and most are in the entertainment industry. Should it be realistic for college football players?

Reading comprehension. It says per year. And everyone has known this number for 20 years. Room and board and tuition and training and whatever and free girls.

They should have cut schollies long ago so they could accurately monetize the gift to these kids. A gift. Bc they can run fast or catch a ball.

We worship these idols and it's getting a bit sick.

University in big time college sports, and even 'smaller' divisions as well) sells the athletes as entertainers as well as have them go through school.

These athletes are used for TV deals, fundraising, overall school marketing, etc. So they are effectively IN the entertainment industry.

That’s where I was going. They are entertainers. But should they earn enough in 3-5 years to set them for life? Only the biggest stars in the entertainment industry can earn that much in 3-5 years and the best college football players are the 2% that can go to the NFL and earn that type of money there. What I question is should anyone be able to make enough money in their first 3-5 working years to live the rest of their life on? And then what happens to them for the rest of their lives? There are many examples of successful athletes who had relatively short careers making great money who still ended up broke and with no skills to do anything else after their athletic careers. This is why I agree with Dabo that they need to get an education and have something to support themselves after football.

Judgements from random people about what other people should make or should not make are meaningless.

Colleges and how they pay their entertainers / ambassadors is their business; the colleges ultimately decide what ‘rules’ for compensating athletes will be imposed. In other words, the colleges ‘self I pose’ the rules on themselves.

NCAA is in control? Not really; the rules which NCAA ‘imposes’ on the colleges can be changed (maybe not immediately … see the contracts with ESPN, etc. which would be prohibitively expensive to break) at such time that the colleges aren’t happy with them.

I don’t see this changing. The philosophical raison d’etre for colleges has largely changed from the business model of creating reputational value via superior education of students (via truly educating young people) to the business model of attracting students who pay exorbitant prices (with the government subsidizing college educations by numerous means … including but not limited to student loan forgiveness) by marketing themselves as a quasi 4 year Disney World experience. In other words, the colleges have changed from’ the young person as the student’ model to ‘young person as the consumer’ model.

College sports? College sports teams represent a meaningful aspect of a student’s entertainment experience at the college. As for the funding of most colleges’ athletic programs, pretty much each college has a separate athletic funding organization which supposedly agrees to function in accordance with the ‘rules’ which apply for the college itself. However, as we all have seen with the NIL and tampering, the ‘rules’ to which athletic funding clubs are supposed to comply are self- investigated thoroughly by the college itself.

In other words, the current college business model finds that cheating in the athletic programs is good for business. Those schools with less wealthy athletic ‘clubs’ can beech and moan all bey want, but complaints from the less wealthy schools will have but minimal impact in the behaviors of the schools with rich athletic clubs.

All of this is a round about way to conclude that the ‘should’s’ of how much college athletes should be paid is irrelevant. The marketplace is simply doing its thing.

I’m confused about Dabo’s comment:
“It’s $125,000 to $145,000 a year for every single kid that comes to Clemson”.

Currently out of state tuition plus room/board checks in at about $50K for fall and spring semesters. I know this because that’s the bill I see from Clemson. It’s still pretty darn expensive but it’s not what he stated.

He may have meant athletic scholarship value for student athletes come out to that which would make more sense (probably football specific I'd guess too)

For heaven’s sake you all. He’s talking about the total value of a 4-year degree. It’s $35,000+ per year. And people overlook that when they say student athletes aren’t being compensated for their playing in a college sport. Welll, they sure as heck are. Where do you think your IPTAY dollars go? A portion of them go to pay tuition for our student athletes. That’s money that they and/or their parents don’t have to pay or borrow. I wish our children had been able to get that kind of “pay for play.” But they are not gifted athletes. Bottom line is that we do pay them by paying for their tuition. Is that enough? Maybe. Maybe not. In today’s world - not.

Yes, from what I have read Dabo's statement of $125k to $145k for each football student is accurate. I read 2-3 years ago Clemson spends about $450,000 per player during their 4-5 years here. Cost includes a lot more than tuition, room & board. Nutrition, medical staff, transportation and a list of other benefits our players receive. It was $450k 2-3 years ago and we all know how much cost have gone up since then.

Ask a golfer how much lesson cost from a top flight teacher (not the guy at the local country club who charges 30 dollars for a 30 minute lesson).

Take the total athletic budget of Clemson and divide it by the total number of athletes. I'll bet that's where Dabo got his figure from.

David Hood, you join the naysayers and say college football has lost it's way but I have never seen any facts. Last season was another season of great games and when players put on their pads and uniforms, nobody would have any clue that NIL exists. The Portal is a way of life and gives thousands of athletes an opportunity they would not have had without it. When the ball is kicked, the first pitch is thrown, the ball is tipped off or the soccer match kicks off, the games are still the same great games they have always has been.

You have to be dumber than a brick. Go look how many enter the portal...then tell me the percentage that actually get a landing spot. Try looking at more than what you see hit a field.... there are thousands each year that never hit it again...for a shot at greed. Go try talking to those families...those kids. Ask them how awesome NIL and the portal is.

After reading that I just want to say I am so proud that Dabo Swinney is the head coach of Clemson football. Sure the two national championships, 8 ACC titles and coaching accolades are great but they are just physical manifestations of how he approaches the program. He puts God first and truly cares for the student athletes that he coaches

Am I a little disappointed in the results last season? Sure I think we all are but that is because Dabo Swinney has set the bar incredibly high and Clemson fans expectations (fairly or unfairly) are to be in national title picture every year...I think Dabo will have us back there very soon

I paid my own way through school and I remember writing checks for about $600 for the semester and that was in the 80s. So sad things have gone up so much.

I currently watch only Texas and Clemson and Michigan. If things keep changing for the worse, I may not watch even those much longer. High school football is still kind of enjoyable, but these pro athletes are getting on my last nerve. I didn't even watch the Super Bowl this year and that was the first time since the very first one and I was about 7 back then.
The No Fun League is just that, no fun anymore, at least to me.

Same here. At the point when college athletics loses much more of its ‘diversion from life’s obligations’ value, then I’ll simply look elsewhere for my diversions.

It won’t in some sort of a ‘protest’ move; it will be because the college game had devolved into a choreographed theater instead of an event in which amateur human beings compete in a contest that is governed by specific rules which are fairly enforced.

NBA became a political (social justice) platform. Social justice / politics are not entertainment to me; I stopped watching the NBA over a decade ago. I keep myself informed about politics, national events, and world events via means other than ‘sports’ programming.

I thought it was a great statement from Dabo, he's still the best in the business in my mind despite me criticizing some of his moves the last 4 years.

For me i found the article interesting because i'm always trying to read into Dabos words a little bit, I know he's a very expressive person, but in the last few years especially he's realized the media will take every little thing he says or has said in the past and try to create a story, for that reason i think he stays a little bit more vague now in his press conferences (on the state of college fooball)

In my opinion based on what he said inside this latest article i believe Dabo in his heart knows this is no longer "truly" college football. He realizes it has gone something far beyond that but as his nature he still says positive things for example saying "NIL is good", i personally dont think he believes that in the deepest part of his heart, but he's all about creating the positive atmosphere and program for his players which is great.

I also don't think Dabo will ever go to the NFL or even any other program in college, i have no proof or way to know that other than a feeling i get based on how he talks (grow where your planted) i believe he has zero interest in ever going to Alabama, if Saban would have left 2 or 3 years earlier i think it may have been different but that ship has sailed.

Lastly i think Dabo may only intend on coaching 20 years, thats probably the number he's set in his own mind, and with all the changes including big money for coaches he's already set financially, I believe he first started at Clemson in 2008/2009 so he may only coach another 4 years in my opinion.

Agree with you.

Also, Dabo’s special / rare strengths are not actual X’s and O’s. Sure, he’s good 8n this area; so are thousands of others. Dabo is an inspirational figure to young people who also had the combination of high energy + business smarts. His inspirational attributes allows him to attract good HS athletes to Clemson. His high energy + superior business acumen allows him to both keep up with the rapid rate of change in CFB and to get Clemson to make adjustments to the changing landscape in a way that optimized Clemson’s strengths -&- conceals Clemson’s weaknesses.

Dabo to the NFL? Never happening. Dabo knows this, and the NFL knows this.

Dabo wishes for the world where an athletic scholarship was a means for a person to get a college education and to be prepared for life after college. But, he understands that he is living in a world that continues to devalue an education and considers it a hindrance in most instances.

He's living in the transition trying to figure out how he can blend his priorities into the reality of the world.
