If we can't beat nc st even losing the turnovers battle then we really are a bad team. This should be a gooseegg less the offense giving them a score. Definitely the bet of the week. Puppies are bad on offense.

I agree, But Clemgalalways I really don't see our D being as good as we were with BV, and with Goodwin as DC it won't look the way that it did with BV and that's bc Goodwin is a very long ways from being an excitable coach that BV was, and BV's excitement is what kept those guys fired up later in the game when they were tired, it was the hellacious fire that BV had that helped to keep those guys going throughout the game, and falling off the side of a mountain wouldn't excite one nerve in Goodwins short fat body. I don't care how knowledgeable a coach is, if he don't have that BV fire in his belly for the game as BV did, you're not going to see your guys perform the way that they did for BV, and that's just a fact!!!

That's a fact as in the current defense's 7th ranking nationally? Nope, that would be an opinion. Only a couple of BV's defenses were better statistically.
I warned all of you about the new OC and nobody listened. The offense is 44th in the country and that's the current problem, not the defense. I don't care about downvotes. I'm right and the stats prove that.

Is that why Coach Brent Venables has Oklahoma heading toward the CFP ? He has improved that OU defense which was horrible under Lincoln Riley.

When sharing statistics about Goodwin’s quality defenses as being comparable (sometimes better) than BV’s defenses, there are many good Tiger fans that just cannot get past the differences in personality and body type between the two.

To the well meaning BV fans (BTW, is there a Clemson fan alive who is not highly appreciative of what BV brought to and left Clemson with as far as defense?), Goodwin’s doughboy physique and calm manner is what resonates to them.

These fans simply cannot get past the superficial factors in order to recognize that, with the exception of the first 4 or 5 games of the 2022 season, have been largely indispensable indistinguishable from BV’s defenses.

Let’s be fair here. BV was a great coach -&- provided entertainment via his personality. Clemson fans confuse the correlation between rah rah personality and results. There is no correlation, at least not for well prepared, well coached, mature D players who don’t need performance arts type of rah rah coaching.

Our players are beautifully coached. They know where to go and when to go there. They miss assignments on occasion, but recognize when they’ve missed their assignments, as opposed to making the same mistakes again and again and again.

BV was also great, but via the same basics of defense coaching as Goodwin.

Brent Venables was the best DC in college football period. He disguised his blitzes and the opposing offense didn't know where we were coming from and who to block. Goodwin doesn't have that ability or he has not shown it and so we are way down on sacks and TFLs. We lost a lot to the NFL last season but we have some veterans on the DL and Goodwin needs to set up more chances for sacks. GO TIGERS.

The NFL would eat up any current defense in college football. What's wrong with you. It's a whole other level. All talk of some team like a prime Alabama beating an NFL team are just ridiculous in their ignorance. The NFL is a league full of grown ### men and would eat up any college team. To say otherwise is silliness at best.

Guaranteed to give up 4th quarter points. Wish we had an o that would get a first down or two late in the game and get them off the field to breathe.

Heck, we couldn’t get the ball because Miami was ground pounding our a$$. 200+ yards of rushing to less than 40 .. Our Oline couldn’t get a yard on the goal line .. what was WG’s take on this ?

Probably same as ours. Surprised and disappointed. This years defense can’t get a stop when we need it most.

^^^ This ^^^ is the key to our defense’s shortcomings in Q4 of games.

There are also personnel deficiencies (which have nothing to do with any coaching factors) that have impacted our late game defensive performance.

LB depth. We simply do not have LB depth to give Trotter and Carter the breathers that they need. Because of the failure of G.Riley ‘s Snail Raid offense, every game against a ‘real’ opponent, with SYR being the exception, was too tight to risk replacing tired Trotter / Carter with well rested younger players who (as of this moment) lack both the physical skills and game knowledge to be trusted in a tight game. I am convinced that the poor tackling by both Trotter and Carter is due in significant part to our LB depth problem.

DE depth. Our depth problem was glaringly evident in Q4 against Miami. With XT being absent due to team rules violation and Mascoll having gotten banged up, we had to rely on an already pooped TJ Parker (who played heroically again) and C.Denhoff (a still-developing player who is simply not yet physically capable of beating the block of a good OT or TE. In Q4 against Miami, we got next to zero production out of our DE unit against Miami’s run game.

Our secondary is terrific; both in starter quality -&- quality depth. Our secondary did not let us down against Miami, with the glaring exception opbeing J.Phillips blown assignment on Miami’s 80 yard TD run in first half. (J.Phillips is an excellent player. Even very good players make mistakes now and then; this happens in college FB.)

Our DT rotation is terrific. Our DTs did not let us down in Saturday.

DE and LB depth problems, which were exposed by the (typical) failure of G.Riley’s offense and by the play of our not-yet-ready-for-big-time QB, did us in on Saturday.

For those watching game film including the team ...

The failure to stop Miami's running game was less about making mistakes filling gaps and more about the Clemson D-line & LB's having their a$$es kicked by their opponent in the 4th Qtr.

you in the 4th quarter. Need to stop showing that video at home games if you can’t live up to it.

Agree. I hope that video isn’t played when we play notre dame. Team too soft and doesn’t represent anything in that deal.

Oct 25, 2023, 5:15 PM

DEs and LBs were gassed by start of Q4.

They aren’t ‘soft.’ The glaring weakness of our defense is the lack of quality depth at DE and LB.

Dabo should take a lesson from Trotter about accountability.

Oct 25, 2023, 12:08 PM

Trotter didn't deflect and make excuses about how they were 2-3 plays away nor that the bandwagon fans suck. He diagnosed the problems and explained how they'll correct them. Great to hear. Go Tigers!

Doesn't hurt that his dad(of the same name) was a former NFL LB..
