What an outstanding football career and life.
My condolences to his numerous family members.
So glad I read his accomplishments while at Clemson. I was not aware of this gentleman's history.

I'm not 100% certain but I believe that Coach Howard said that Joel Wells was the best football player that he ever coached. I'll have to check "Howard", Frank Howard's book.

I saw Joel Wells play several times, and he was really good. The article says that he played for the Giants against the Packers in the 1961 NFL title game. It doesn't say that he was a starting RB for the Giants nor that he returned the game's opening kickoff. He was both kick and punt returner for the Giants.

There is a full game video, of the NFL championship game that he played in, on Youtube. His stats weren't great, as I recall, but then neither were any of the other running backs, that played in that game.
RIP Joel Wells.

Did he have a relationship with Clemson after graduating? Did his children attend? Did he make any of the decade/half-century all Clemson or all ACC teams?
I remember him, I just don't remember him after graduation. I didn't follow NFL/CFL in those days.

books that I've read on Clemson football. One being, "Clemson Football, 1896 to Glory", and another on the Clemson, S.Carolina rivalry. I can't remember the name, but it had great write ups, on every game and stories about the coaches and players. It covered the games up until 1966, so it's a pretty old book.

I played golf with Mr. Wells a few times in various tournaments and once at Greenville CC. He was a fine man and a wonderful southern gentleman. Thoroughly enjoyed his company.
