I wonder why teams 'scheme' away our deep threat?

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Probably because of a young quarterback that has shown...

11

a tendency to get anxious and make mistakes. If the QB gets anxious, the offense naturally follows. Looking at the miscues in tight situations, red zone and back against your own end zone, it seems pretty clear.

Experience will hopefully generate the patience to see and take what's in front of you.

Teams have been scheming away our deep threat for 3 years***

This is due to no Artavis Scott or Amari Rodgers where the underneath passes ( also poor blocking receivers) can go the distance. Its as simple as that, no home run threat from the line of scrimage or just past it. The only common denominator I see is the absence of Jeff Scott as recruiter and WR coach.

Clemson has struggled to run the ball at times this year so they’re forcing us to nickel and dime our way down the field. But we’ve had to nickel and dime our way down the field for 3 years now. Plus we always STRUGGLE to finish a 12+ play drive. We tend to shoot ourselves in the foot somewhere along the way.

we have one RB that only needs half the carries

If you don't use ALL CAPS in the lunge, how do they know?

I doubt it's rugged good looks or you going full Oliver when they were passing out penor, "more please, may I have more?"

Maybe you start small fires?

Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan.

That's because he only gets half the carries. He doesn't get as many of the no-gain-up-the-middle-because-the-line-didn't block plays.

If teams are taking away our deep threat with two high safeties.... you do one of two things. One, run the ball b/c you have numbers in the box if the LBs are hanging back or go right where the LBs came from with slants and the TE.

That forces the safeties to cheat up and viola.... the deep ball is open.

I don't like admitting openly how to defend us.... take away the deep ball, keep everything in front until they make a mistake which we have proven to do this season.

Playing offense against a team that takes away the deep threat with two or three high requires patience and continuing to run the ball until you make the defense adjust to respect it. Patience that we have not consistently shown this season in both our ability to run block when the numbers favor the run and in the play calling to keep running it. I can not remember when we committed to the run teams being able to stop it. I can remember many times when we were running the ball very effectively when we would abandon the run and kill drives.

That defensive scheme worked very well for the Pats for a very long time. We also have shown extreme difficulty in blocking a 3-3-5 defense both in run blocking and pass protection.

All that being said.... we will figure it out this season I am confident.

Scheme away our deep threat is code word for: “We had to take what they gave us”

A lot of this is right on, and there is no speed burner to run through creases in the defense and take one to the house. Some of those runs the other day against Wake Forest, Etienne would have finished the run and is celebrating on The Hill. Same at receiver. Williams getting back on the field should help Brown and vice versa. Stellato getting more reps will only help, too.

The only way to get Clemson back to that championship level is through recruiting. I like the next class but not sure how many will be ready to go outside the box.

I’ve missed the part where the other teams have been scheming against the deep pass.

Remember last week against Syracuse on B.Collin’s long TD pass? He was in one on one coverage by the Syracuse CB. He beat the CB badly. Where was the safety? Watching for the middle range pass.

Syracuse also gave up deep balls to T.Brown. Some had help from a safety, but T.Brown caught the ball anyways. At least one in that situation when Brown got beyond the S and CB, the pass was well defended. Another such situation Brown got open anyways, but the pass was inaccurate. Yet on other occasions, Brown was in single coverage and open on deep routes; he caught one of those and another pass was inaccurate.

WF, from what I recall, didn’t have Safety help on deep balls. It didn’t matter. We were never a threat because either our WR still could not get open, or CK2 didn’t see the WR, or the pass was inaccurate.

(*). Both Syracuse and WF schemed their defenses to stop the short to intermediate routes, and to stop the run. In other words, their safeities were close enough to the LOS to come up and help on run plays.

(?). Does anyone know why play-action calls are rare as Big Foot?

Because noone is afraid of the handoff right now because our line doesn't open up holes to run through.

Do we not understand Xs and Os football?

Wake played this same defensive set the majority of the game. The two deep safeties don’t move from their zone in the middle of the field (in this example at the 45 yard line). You just have to adjust their route running. Instead of running a bland fly route with the CB playing 10 yards off, have Beaux run an out-n-up. If you make that adjustment he’s doing his time check celebration in the end zone.

This is why I think Garrett Riley should be in the booth. If the person up there isn’t seeing this and relaying it to him, that’s the problem.

They had different players and an experienced QB. Cade will get there.... But coaching and play calling can help him get there faster. They will be fine. Bye week coming at a great time.

Wasn't last season Garrett's only season at TCU, those guys must have adapted pretty fast in fall camp, but he did have a real coaching staff at TCU, and it's the inexperience coaching staff that he's having to adapt to at Clemson, and that I would bet on!!!!

TCU's offense last year within 6 games had...

1. A 1st round draft pick WR
2. A Heisman runner up WB
3. An early 2nd round Offensive lineman
4. No big defense to face

We wanted to ignore how it looked vs UGA... maybe we shouldn't?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

TCU had a much better schedule to get the O going

1

Oct 10, 2023, 4:50 AM

The TCU schedule last season gave the offense a good chance to build confidence and get it going compared to our schedule in my opinion.

They went against no defenses with a pulse and had an experienced QB too.

Here is the facts. Our CEO is getting paid 10+ million a year and his team is unranked halfway through the season. That's reality folks.

you gotta get more creative. You have to gain respect and get a bunch of guys on your side with some sunshine pumping, then you start meddling and causing dissension in the fanbase. You can't just start off hot, it's too amateur. Go back to FGF, practice up, then come back with your new handle and lets see how it goes next time.

Only 2 coaches that are paid 10 million+ and not ranked in the top 25. Dabo Swinney and Mel Tucker.

I don't get the hate for Riley so many fans have

3

Oct 10, 2023, 9:20 AM

The guy has simplified and opened up this offense 10 fold compared to what Street had it! The middle of the field isn't lava anymore, the screens have been cut in half, he is scheming receivers open now and doing all this with a 1st yr starter and probably the worst crop of productive upperclass WRs Clemson has had in some time. The prior years WRs that are on this team are developed about as well as a rising freshman in high school and he is scheming them open. Not to mention he has to do all this with a wet paper bag for an OL on run blocking and a damp paper bag OL on passing plays. Give the man his credit, if we still had street we'd be 2-4 right now.

If Dabo would leave his play sheet in the dressing room, Riley could do a better job. Just my 2 cents worth.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This should end the meddling nonsense.

Oct 10, 2023, 4:44 PM

But I’m sure there are some who will need to be reminded… this is Riley’s offense and he’s calling the plays.

Cade and offense took a step backwards on Saturday. Cade was not seeing the field well at all and his accuracy was down too.

The offense has been really coming along until Saturday. I wish Dabo wouldn’t have meddled so much. Lol.
