The haters will say the following:

- these numbers dont tell us anything
- our coaches try to use the portal just as much as anybody, but they just cant be successful because of tampering
- we brought in 2 backup qbs with no ambition of playing through the portal
- players in the portal arent good
- we are fine replacing recruiting busts and outgoing transfers with freshman.

you don't think that number 4 for FSU that transferred from michigan st is good? if not, you and i have different definitions of what "good" is.

I could be wrong, but I just don't think there is that many players in the portal that were weekly starters for the teams they left for the portal unless there was tampering with big NIL $$$$ promises.

Interesting. Initial gut would be to know how many players and prior starters those programs have lost to the portal. That would identify their needs to go to the portal but hard to argue with what this is saying.

That #4 transfer squad needed overtime to beat our lowly freshman-built team. Would love to see Dabo and Co. knock off all of these squads in the next couple seasons and prove that things can still be done without disgracing college football.

Just because the PROTAL is legal, does not mean that it isn't disgraceful. Call me old fashioned but I still place more value on doing things the right way. I would prefer that our team continue to be built through recruiting and developing players vice scouring the country and signing free agents from other teams' garbage.

That is garbage Downhill. The purpose of any athlete going to college is to get an education. When it comes to the Portal, there are hundreds of kids that find a spot and an education and there are hundreds more that are working at a fast food restaurant. An athlete going to the Portal is in no way disgraceful nor is a school signing a player from the Portal disgraceful or wrong.

You are insinuating that the PROTAL is being used for what it was originally intended - To offer STUDENT-athletes an opportunity to transfer out of a bad situation at one school into a better situation at another. If that were the case, I would agree with you.

As soon as the waiting period was lifted and all first-time transfers are immediately eligible, it became the wild west of free agency. The programs that have tainted what should have been a good rule to benefit STUDENT-athletes are disgraceful. It has become a highest bidder situation and a side effect of that, is me no longer caring about those that should have benefitted from the original rule.

At this point, if you aren't a Power-5-starter level player you shouldn't even consider getting in the PROTAL because you know that you will get left in the trash pile.

It is only going to get worse after this past weekend with UNC and Tez Walker breaking through the one-time transfer barrier. It will soon be unlimited transfers with immediate eligibility and star players will continue to gain more and more bargaining power where they sign the highest one year deal they can get.

This is the NFL with no rules - beyond disgraceful

However, TU to you for caring about the players that gave up a guaranteed education to hop in the PROTAL. Whoever advised those kids is also disgraceful.

This is blatantly inaccurate.

what about when.........

1

Oct 12, 2023, 5:14 PM [ in reply to Re: Transfer stats. Very interesting ]

you're losing 33%-42% of your "recruited/developed kids" TO THE PORTAL EACH YEAR???........that's what's happening at Clemson, probably still on the lower end compared to most schools, but 33%-42% is a large "low end" number to lose to the portal.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: what about when.........

Oct 12, 2023, 5:26 PM

Then it's a very good thing that Clemson is great at recruiting and usually great at evaluating players. 85 scholarships is a big number to play with. Just have to keep doing everything they can to continue developing the roster. There haven't been very many in that 33-42% that were providing much action in the 2-deep - Maybe Derion Kendrick. Starters stay and those that can't hack it make room for more players to come in.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

yeah, you don't understand either.....y'all are all the same

1

Oct 12, 2023, 5:36 PM

so it's just a coincedence that our "developing" players have sucked for the better part of 3-4 years??

When you are replacing that kind of percentage of veterans.......regardless of starter/backup with TRUE FRESHMAN and/or WALK-ONS......the play on the field SUFFERS...........hence why we've looked like crap compared to our "elite" years the last 3 years.

some recruiting, evaluating, and development we got going on........especially when 33-42% of them are leaving every year.

I think Saban said it best this past week - That the PROTAL makes poor to average teams better faster. But to get into the top tier, you have to have continued success in recruiting and development. The PROTAL is just a band-aid for tier-one programs. FSU needed to get 7 starters from the PROTAL to get on Clemson's level, and I would argue that we are still the better team, and the better program, and will have more sustained success. Clemson is beyond the level where adding in other teams' garbage would improve our level of play on the field.

Keon Coleman, Jared Verse, Sam Hartman, and similar players are the exception. They do not represent what the PROTAL largely consists of. There will be elite PROTAL players that Clemson goes after like the O-lineman from Virginia, and I wish that we had landed him. These guys still have to be recruited and choose to come to Clemson. Not all of them understand how great that opportunity is and how great it is at Clemson University. If we didn't understand how great Clemson was, each of us would dive on the massive NIL checks that are being used to buy these players.

Re: yeah, you don't understand either.....y'all are all the same

1

Oct 12, 2023, 6:15 PM

that's the thing.....I'm not advocating for Clemson to use portal like Colorado or even FSU at this point. Clemson needs a couple "bridge the gap" players (maybe 3-4ish) at 1-3 positions. I'm 100% on board that Clemson doesn't need to "BUILD" from the portal, but we are NOT immuned from players leaving as stated in my previous posts on the amount of players LOST to the portal and those vacancies need to be filled with a portion of Portal players in lieu of Walk-ons and/or Freshmen.

and for the record I personally believe that if Dabo truly embraced the portal to "capture" those 3-4 bandaids that he's smart enough to be able to land the Colemans and Jameson Williams of the portal world.

Completely agree that Keon Coleman would have been a great get, he is a polished receiver. Even if it was only to keep him from taking us out in OT.

This should be a good recruiting tool to use against the teams that heavily use the portal. Let recruits know that they'll grab a more seasoned player from the portal and use them ahead of them at least until they are a Jr or Sr....

Oct 12, 2023, 5:11 PM [ in reply to Re: Transfer stats. Very interesting ]

so the recruiting pitch is...."hey HS Senior sign with us and you might get to play more sooner because our coach doesn't have history of using the portal but he DOES have a history of giving upper classmen every possible benefit of the doubt to keep their starting spot PLUS you'll be lucky to sniff the Top 25 while your here and you'll be relegated to mostly noon kickoffs on the ACC network. yeah, GREAT pitch.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Transfer stats. Very interesting

Oct 13, 2023, 5:09 PM

Those numbers may be a little inflated because it looks like they are counting part-time starters, and not just regular starters. UGA took 4 transfers this year (which is actually a bit high for us). One of them, Rara Thomas, has started three games, and another, Dominic Lovett, has started two. That's out of six games. The other two have not played.
