We lost an OL recruit to GT…

2

Jul 28, 2023, 10:41 AM

What are these kids thinking going to great engineering schools for a free education?!?

When will we lose recruits to Harvard and Yale? You’d think at some point, kids would start taking advantage of these athletic scholarships and go to IVY League.

Morgan Roberts took the pre-portal portal to Yale.***

We already have 15 scholarship OL who were as highly or higher rated than the guy under discussion.

We are not short of OL. We signed three good ones last cycle. That matters. You do not need to just bring in a bunch of players at a particular position every year regardless of their potential.

Example: Georgia … they signed three very highly regarded LB last cycle. This time, they missed Sammy Brown, a in-state kid and the best LB in this class. As of now, they have only one LB committed for 2024. He’s very talented of course, but they still only have the one. Are they screwing up? Do they need to fire their LB coach because he can’t recruit?

Westphal was the only one we probably should feel some pain about losing, but once again, we are not hurting for OL in either quantity or quality.

Well, I'm not overly concerned about our lack of success in the 2024 OL recruiting class--Yet! After all, we still have another six or so months left in our 2024 recruiting year. Still time for a flip (though I'm doubtful we'll be successful there), or a late fine of an undiscovered OL gem (also unlikely at this point), or finding second tier OLs. However, I think it's extremely doubtful we'll get any top OL targets this year.

Additionally, there are a multitude of TigerNet posters who would vehemently disagree with your current assessment, and who have constantly complained about our OL recruiting over the years. And while I'm not a complainer about our OL recruitment during the Dabo years, I would say that our OL recruiting success during this era definitely falls way short compared to every other Clemson position group.

On the other hand, I've not been overly concerned about the OL situation over the years because of several factors, including:
1. Predicting an OL recruiting target's success is generally considered one of the hardest position groups to predict.
2. I've seen a steady (although slow) improvement (generally--at least until 2024) in OL recruitment over the Dabo era.
3. Dabo's coaches have been so successful in recruiting every other position group.
4. Dabo's success shows up constantly in his record within the ACC, and overall, with the 2nd best record of all College Head
Coaches during his era--including 2 National Championships, 6 straight trips to the college football playoffs, and winning 7 of the last 8 ACC championships.
5. Finally, our current OL coach is only in his 2nd year. Others may not think this is relevant, but I do--furthermore, Dabo agrees with me (at least, so far :) ).

The Ivy League is the only Division I athletic conference that prohibits member schools from offering athletic scholarships.

Riggs was always a heavy GT lean and we offered late in the process. I would love it if we could flip an OL from another school. Only time will tell.

We should go after one of the 3 lamecock O. line recruits. Tell them: they cannot use three at once and after a 6-6 season, they will decommit anyway.
