Wing T by the jags gave me flashbacks to

watching ETNs high school highlights. I remember watching them during the tail end of recruiting after we lost out on Richardson (blast from the past, I know!). And then during the summer camp, everyone was talking about this ETN kid breaking big runs so I watched more highlights. I always thought, whew this kid is talented but has his work cut out for him coming from such an old school / out dated offense.

Kind of cool to see it come full-circle to him making maybe the biggest play of the game in a playoff win in the NFL running the wing T.

I often wonder why teams don’t go back a find a package or two of old offensive schemes. Modern defenses are tooled different these days to handle the expected plays. Most of the players and probably a fair number of coaches are not familiar with some of the schemes (atleast not in a live on the field scenario). Find these plays and practice them for key game situations or an extra trick for a 2 pt conversion.

That would be fun. Of course, the moment it fails the coach will be criticized. Clearly some of these concepts can work when executed well, eg Pawl Johnson at GT. Would be neat to see some old school concepts sprinkled in.

Present day backfield setup is like the old single wing. The play Jacksonville ran was from the T. QB under center fullback left and right halfbacks. Which is what Clemson ran late 50s early 60s. Wing T came later. Bobby Gage Ray Matthews Fred Cone and those guys ran the single wing. Travis was running wing T in high school.

Good call. I’m not familiar with essentially any of those formations. By the time I was playing football, it was under center with a single RB or shotgun (11 personnel). Appreciate the lesson, though!

indeed, classic 'T' not wing(ed)

can't remember the last time i saw a team run a play from that formation

seen some teams start in it but then shift out into something very different before the snap

I'm sorry, but in all those ETN clips, I NEVER saw the Winged T formation once....
