Reason we blamed DJ so much

8

Oct 23, 2023, 2:15 PM

Is pretty evident now. We saw the change in the team for the worst. Something wasn't right.

We believed it had to be something easy to fix, after all we just had some of the best years ever and we were told and believed that the great years would continue for a long time. There was no reason at all to not trust Dabo and the staff at that point. Therefore it was pretty easy to simply chalk it up to the wrong QB. We missed on him talent wise and everything would be fixed again if we just changed that.

That explains why we took it out all on DJ.

Now it's clear there were issues much deeper and DJ was the unfortunate individual to take the brunt. Particularly in 2021.

Or - DJ exacerbated problems over two full seasons that have become even more entrenched. You’re looking for a simple explanation while criticizing discrediting aa simple solution. There are a multitude of variables leading to the circumstances we’re in. But folks like simple answers and to assign blame.

This is not accurate, and possibly the least true post in the history of TNET. DJU with a bunch of three stars is ranked #11. We are now 4-3.

had no business in a RPO system - none.

Now - how that reflects on what is going on right now - I have no idea.

But he was LOST as our QB for 2 years - and yes, he won a bunch of games.

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

Agree, we tried to make a great prospect fit into a system that did not play to his strengths and only magnified his weaknesses. We would have had to build a new offense around him and we weren't going to do that. Everyone made the effort but the experiment failed.

I hate that he probably took more grief than he deserved and I'm glad he seems happier and playing more confidently in a new system that fits him better and at a school that is closer to home.

then why was recruited in the first place.

Clemson coaches are responsible for the failures the last few seasons. Poor talent evaluation and development.

DJ was not the only issue, but he was the major issue the past two seasons. I hate it for him. He was clearly going through a lot. He seems like a good kid, and I wish him nothing but the best going forward. We are having an inexplicable season this year. Part of it is a new OC, there are always some growing pains. Some of it is more injury issues at WR. Some of it is a young QB trying to do too much. Most of it is turnovers, many of which are just bad luck. It stinks. It's not fun. But it's where we are right now.

Hmmm . . .

Oct 23, 2023, 2:30 PM

A huge portion of the critics that wanted CK to replace DJ about mid-season last year acknowledged that DJ was not the only problem - that there were issues with WR's, the OL, special teams, play-calling, etc. So this wasn't, at the time (and still isn't) simply reduceable to whether either everything was DJ's fault or nothing was. DJ had his problems, and Cade's has his, but Cade is also working with much worse OL play than DJ did, less of the security net of a reliable FG kicking game. Last year, DJ was sketchy enough at times that even Dabo was willing to bench him vs. Syracuse, and ND, and SC. We weren't all imagining it.

Those who reduced to DJ and DJ alone were wrong to make it that simple. But for the majority, the critique on DJ was merely that **on top of** all these other problems, DJ's inconsistencies were making things unnecessarily worse. DJ went through spots last year where he had no pressure at all, and would still overshoot the receiver. Cade throws well when he has time, but way too often he's running for his life when he's out there - this makes a huge difference.

I don't think most everyone blamed DJ alone, I think they thought he was the most easily and quickly replaceable single piece of a multi-faceted problem. It's not like you can just as easily bench an entire OLine or Special Teams unit and try it on for size here and there. QB is different.

Re: Hmmm . . .

Oct 23, 2023, 2:54 PM

But to be fair, you did have A LOT of people in the pre-season expecting this to be a playoff team simply because DJ was no longer the QB, and Cade was going to be our savior. While DJ had his warts, he did manage games well enough to go 22-6 as a starter and now 6-1 at a new school, for a combined 28-7. I don't know how many active QBs there are with a better record with that many games under their belts, but there can't be many. Yes, we can talk about schedules and all that but I do give the young man credit for the things he can control.

I actually hope he picks up a baseball when his FB eligibility is over and gives that a try...

2024 purple level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes . ..

Oct 23, 2023, 3:14 PM

Yes, there were lots of folks that expected that. I never understood that b/c I thought we looked questionable enough all around that a better QB would help but not light the sky on fire. I expected a top 15 team, but not top 10 and certainly not top five. But you're right, there were plenty expecting that. But I think the point remains that Cade's mistakes this year are weighed down w/ more problems than last year's team, and almost no one last year was laying the entire egg at DJ's feet - that was always a mischaracterization designed to stop discussion and slander the critics.

Re: Yes . ..

Oct 23, 2023, 4:00 PM

I am just shocked at our inability to pick up a yard with two bruiser running backs and a mobile QB and 4 returning starters on the O-Line. Twice at Duke first and goal at the 1, 3rd and 1 vs FSU, 1st and goal from the 4 vs Wake, 1st and goal from the 3 twice at Miami. That's 3 points in six trips due to short yardage. We convert those and we are a playoff team.

Thats not even mentioning our 2nd down run game which generates a loss of two yards to set up a third and long. I thought we could do to teams what Miami did to us in the 4th quarter. Generate positive yards on every down and let Cade convert 3rd and 5 instead of 3rd and 12.

I thought we were better than that.

Not sure who blamed it all on DJ, but DJ as de facto leader showed up close...

4

Oct 23, 2023, 2:35 PM

to 270 in 2021, in no shape to play football and it showed.

The staff wrapped him in swaddlings, changed/dumbed down the offense to protect him as much as possible. In the last two regular season games they went heavy 21 personnel, DJ threw it a total of 38 times and Clemson ran it nigh 100[97?].

That is a huge departure from the planned balance attack brought since the theChad showed up with his smash-mouf spread.

The staff reshaped DJ coming into 2022, where he lost 30-40 pounds, which likely helped get his mind right and it showed until he fell off the truck again in Game 8.

The most earnest comment I've read is DJ saying he was not comfortable under the bright lights and constant attention that came with being the starting QB at Clemson. He says he's found peace in relative anonymity at OSU, so I'm happy for the young man. To date he looks like the same DJ through 7 games that played at Clemson in 2022.

I’ve seen some of dj’s games and he is the same with under throws, over throws, and wobbly throws. He will not do much in the draft.

Class of ‘71. Went through “rat season” and glad I did.

of course there were deeper issues than DJ.....

2

Oct 23, 2023, 2:38 PM

DJ was definitely part of the problem.......not near the magnitude many made him out to be
Streeter was an issue
WR talent was........and STILL IS an issue
Coaching/development in certain areas was........and STILL IS an issue

DJ was low hanging easy fruit for most of the fanbase to blame......he's gone
Streeter's gone

what's left??
lack of WR talent (lack of overall offensive talent in general) and coaching/development.......neither of which can be corrected during the season.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dont forget bad luck, NIL, transfer portal, and anti-Clemson bias.

Basically, Dabo is a poor victim who is up against oppressive forces much greater than he.

Well said.

I know a few posters like to minimize the problems. Say this year's an anomaly, new coordinator, turnovers etc. That explains some of the close games but I'm more of the opinion that you share and David Hood spelled out.

I've always said, it's the Jimmy and Joes. Sure, our recruit rankings are pretty good. But we've missed on a lot of our top guys, especially offense the last 3 cycles. We have good rated players with all the measurements and ratings but not necessarily good at football. Imo, that's two-fold. One, young inexperienced coaches that are learning how to spot targets and inexperienced in developing the talent we do have.

Our D is good this year. Not great. Certainly not as good as they should be. We couldn't hang with top 10 teams the last 3 years on either side of the ball.

DJ was definitely part of the problem but I don't remember many people saying he was the ONLY problem over those two seasons.

The issue has always been the oline. Always.

He was not Deshaun or Trevor and neither is Cade. Now instead of blaming Cade, Dabo gets blamed now.

Re: Reason we blamed DJ so much

Oct 23, 2023, 3:02 PM

Dude couldn’t hit a RB 5 yards away on a swing pass. Say what you will, but DJ was a head case that couldn’t handle the bright lights He didn’t have the luxury of a great running game to bail him out, like he has now.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Lol, no. DJs 2 years at the helm set us back several years.

1

Oct 23, 2023, 3:18 PM

Even the coaches insistence on playing him till the bitter end last season cost us valuable development time with Cade that would have been helpful this season.

It’s not an either-or. We can have major staff issue AND DJ could have been an absolute bust at CU.

1. Because he deserved it.

There is no amount of talking, typing or telepathy that will convince me that I did not watch him stare at receivers and then throw it there, no matter what. I saw it over and over and over again and I know that’s not good.
