Recruiting good and bad

6

Jul 10, 2023, 8:37 AM

It's been a long few weeks, and the good news is our first interviews are in 8 days. Until then, recruiting reigns....

Big OT Fletcher Westphal makes his choice today, and this time last week I felt good about Clemson's chances (so did Clemson) and not so good about William Satterwhite.

For me, its all about communication, and when things went dark with Westphal late last week, much like with Satterwhite, it was a portent of things to come and it will be Florida for him. There will be no surprise... He's going to be a Gator. Jameson Riggs is still in the picture, but at this point I'm not sure how realistic that is.

However, Brad Brownell is looking like he might get good news when Dallas Thomas announces today. I've been told the staff feels really good about their chances.

It's time to rally behind our current OLine!

These guys will be here for the next 1-3 seasons.
This has been a weak spot in the program but everyone has NFL dreams. So I'm expecting a lot of drive and underdog grit from this squad. Can't wait for them to absolutely flourish under Garret Riley!

The Gamecocks, Gators, and Vols will always look up to Georgia Bulldogs and Alabama Crimson Tide.

Enjoy the money! While we enjoy CFP.

(1 point away from CFP on our worst run in over a decade, lol)

Clemson doesn't care about basketball....as evidenced by Brown-L getting 14 years.

Georgia already has 26 commitments and it is not even August yet. How many will they take this year?

Looks like it will be 3 star developmental guys for the Oline this year unless someone decommits during the fall months.

I wonder if the Clemson staff will identify a grad transfer option as a stop gap to keep the functional depth. I suspect Oline recruiting could pick up again next year after a season of the new offense in place.

I think we have only 1 guy projected to leave. It is

I guess that will depend on how many scholarships they take back from unsuspecting players that signed with them last year or the year before. I know that Dabo and Clemson has a squeaky clean reputation within our sports programs about doing the right thing, but there is always a time when they see that a recruit has become an utter disappointment, and their agreement should be re-evaluated for the betterment of the program and why we even have a program, and with Clemson it is to win at the highest level!!!

Man, I sure hope we did not miss on Westphal. He would be a great addition to a promising Oline.

I believe you got the answer with David posting this thread.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Thanks for the update. Do we have fall backs that look

4

Jul 10, 2023, 9:33 AM

promising on the OL?

Fortunately, this is a hard position to scout so maybe we could get lucky with a fall-back type of guy.

While disappointing, let’s not forget that we have Colin Saddler, Harris Sewell, Ian Reed, Zack Owens. Most of which are rated higher and are very young

TA hit on the talent in 2023. Big swing and a miss in 2024. Defense seems to be the only positions we can recruit at a high level consistently. RB has had well below average years. We have what looks to be a sold D1 prospect in this class. The guy for 2025 looks to be top shelf. We all know how WR has gone. Looks like we got a couple good ones this class. QB we do recruit at a high level consistently. We always skip classes to get the bigger guys. I think our 2025 guy isn’t elite. We all know how OL has been.

"The 2025 guy isn't elite"

1

Jul 10, 2023, 10:20 AM

You mean the guy who shot up recruiting boards only a few weeks after the Clemson staff had him on campus, offered him, and already committed to our Clemson Tigers ??

He is the #3 dual-threat style QB for 2025 with time to move up more as he grows!

If the elite means Trevor Lawrence or Deshaun Watson, then very few QB's will ever meet the criteria

Sorry, that was a mistake. He is elite.. I didn’t come back and check my post. I totally meant to say he IS elite.

I, for one, still like Thomas Austin. Can’t explain what happened this year. But I do think we will have an improved offensive line with him.

Sad when the good news is about Brownell Ball.

Clemson Football has never really made the O Line a priority, big time recruits will go elsewhere until coaching and development prove otherwise.

That's the landscape of college football and we better saddle up for it. If we aren't paying then we are idiots...plain and simple.

And you're right...Napier is an absolute buffoon is going to get ran out of that dump after next year or year after...

Isn’t that what people said after Dabo landed Sammy Watkins and others coming off a losing season in 2010 and hiring a high school coach as the new offensive coordinator?? I will never judge other programs or recruits. Napier may be amazing. Who knows.

Yes, the bottom line in almost all cases is $il related. As far as ol recruits and players, it takes a different type lineman in the air raid offensive system. You need a more mobile, trim type that is in much better shape, and more athletic than your mauler type for just a running game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's more than short-term NIL Money

2

Jul 10, 2023, 5:51 PM

It's long-term money for these young OL recruits based on (lack of) Clemson NFL OL preparation and success. It's been Clemson's Achille's heel for a long long time. It's remarkable how DW4 and TL16 overcame average and below average O-linemen. Props to both.

IMHO Clemson should start recruiting O-linemen primarily in the mid-west and wave the white flag when recruiting OL versus UGA, Bama, Ohio St, Notre Dame, TX, and most of the SEC. I suggest we recruit OL headed to Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota St, etc. It would help the team and allow these mid-west linemen to block for better skill players at Clemson and a chance to win it all. And Garrett Riley's 2023 Offense will also give us a boost recruiting Texas area and mid-west linemen.
