Responding to the Team USA haters

Nov 25, 2022, 12:07 PM

There's been a lot of talk on here from people who neither like nor watch nor understand soccer about Team USA. So since you folks have been so vocal - and wrongheaded, IMHO - I think it's only fair the other side gets to respond to some of statements I disagree with the most strongly. And of course I'm gonna.

THE USA SUX AT SOCCER AND WILL NEVER BE ANY GOOD AND STRUGGLES AGAINST BANANA REPUBLIC COUNTRIES.
Uh, no. The USA is actually pretty good nowadays and a lot of us have worked really hard to build the game in this country. The vast majority of our younger guys like Christian Pulisic, Gio Reyna, Weston McKennie, Sergino Dest, etc. all play for top teams in top leagues on big-money contracts, some of them the very elite of the elite, those being Champions League squads. Even some of our MLS-based guys who play in America (like Walker Zimmerman, the brother of former Clemson punter Dawson Zimmerman) make millions playing in the US. Dabo's godson Tanner Tessman (who Dabo wanted as a kicker) makes big money playing for Venezia in Italy...and hasn't even made the squad yet.

We may well get thumped by England today...but England is #5 in the world and a legit contender to win it all this year. England's squad looks like a war machine this year. (They crushed #20 Iran 6-2 in the opener.) We're ranked #16 in the world out of 211 countries, pretty good, but not elite yet. And the world rankings in soccer are remarkably like those in college football...maybe the Top 7-8 teams are real threats to win the big trophies, the rest of us are struggling to get into the elite.

We're trying to break into that elite. But our group is also very, very young.
https://www.fifa.com/fifa-world-ranking/men?dateId=id13792

SOCCER SUX AND I CAN'T STAND IT AND NOBODY CARES.
If as a spectacle and sporting event you can't watch this, you don't like sports or are just being willfully stubborn. The World Cup is watched by ten times the audience of a Super Bowl. Our group is also tough, the toughest in the World Cup. England's ranked #5, we're #16, Wales #19, and Iran #20. That's brutal. We opened with #19-in-the-world Wales and got a 1-1 draw...we were by a good bit the better team, but while our young guys dominated the game early we failed to blow the Welch out when we should have the first half and put them away and then Walker Zimmerman - who has been our best defender - made an uncharacteristic mistake and hacked Wales' best player in the box, which bailed them out and forced us to settle for a 1-1 draw. The World Cup is unforgiving and often cruel...and the hardest competition in the world, period. Next up: #5 England.

GREGG BERHALTER IS A WOKE COMMIE WHO HATES AMERICA BECAUSE HE WORE A BLACK SHIRT THAT JUST SAYS "STATES" AND HE'S MAKING SOME SORT OF POLITICAL STATEMENT.
I have no idea how this idea got traction but it shows the power of the Stupid Internet these days. Gregg Berhalter is one of the blandest guys I've ever listened to, focuses pretty much robotically on soccer and soccer and nothing-but-soccer, and to him, anything that distracts from The Task or The Plan is a distraction to him. And more to the point, he wears what Nike - who has the team's sponsorship deal and who designs the entire team and coaches' uniforms with zero input from the USSF - gives him. And he's been wearing some variation of the "STATES" shirt for years now, it ain't new, people.

Anyhoo. That's my piece. React how you will. But there's been a lot of ridiculousness on here about this and it grates bigly on those of us who love the game...and America too.

Get behind your freaking American team, people. And if you can't do that, at least just exercise your God-given right as an American to just turn the TV off and just don't watch.

don’t really like soccer. usually watch the high profile games like USA vs whoever for a medal or cup. BUT!!!

The womens soccer team and that reject rapinoe has turned me away from the sport all together.

If you are passionate about building followers you may want to figure out how to keep politics off the platform these athletes get.

Just like in every sport there’s becoming more and more political stances and agendas being highlight. SPORTS IS NOT THE PLACE GOR THAT CRAP!!!

Especially in a less popular sport like soccer. So that’s my rant.
TU for a good post though.

I agree. Sports should be unifying.

Iran's fans were literally brawling in the stands with each other today...even as their team made a miracle finish and scored not once but twice in a tied game with maybe thirty second left. Stuff is just that messed up in Iran right now, which is experiencing riots that made ours a couple years back look like a square dance.

Especially on a world stage, sports players need to just represent their nation, for good or for ill, and stand together. And the rest of us all maybe need to take a breath.

Totally agree about Rapinoe and the women's team. Was talking about that to a friend a few mins ago at the start of the mens game. I made the comment about how the women's team can take notes from the mens team. No kneeling and everyone singing the anthem. If you dislike what this flag and what this country stands for, then don't play for the national team. Let someone whom is patriotic play. Oh and this years mens team is pretty good. Hope they do well but still rooting for my birth country. Viva España

She won’t stand for the flag but wants to play on a team that represents the USA. I won’t watch the women’s team anymore for allowing that. And Biden gave her a medal. Nuf said.

Everytime there is contact someone falls to the ground like they've been shot. It ends one of two ways: he writhes around on the ground, as if in excruciating pain or he gets carted off like he's on life support. Either way, he's back in the game 2 minutes later.

Soccer hurts, man. You don't get it until you've played it. It hurts bad. Watch the video in the original post. The announcer is Stuart Holden - from Clemson. He was a Team USA guy, one of our brightest stars, might have been the US's best-ever midfielder...until his career got ended by a Manchester United defender making a dirty tackle.

Yeah, there's too much diving and embellishment. But there's also some serious, legit pain involved in playing that game...at least as much as American-rules football.

No, your leg is not supposed to bend this way.

These guys are much tougher than your average football player. They are in the game pretty much the entire time. No breaks for oxygen, no injury tent, no massive knee braces, and most of all, no pads (other than shin guards) or helmets. I was a goalkeeper back in the day. Had two concussions, a broken nose, a fractured orbital, fractured sinuses, broken fingers, sprained ankles, and frequently banged up knees. There are no time outs, no commercial breaks, no replay review breaks, no subbing in and out so you can catch your breath.

Happy Thanksgiving Quiz-

I appreciate your take here. Not a soccer fan, but my wife and I usually get into the World Cup regardless of whether the US qualifies or makes it to eliminations.

Like a a lot of folks, I take issue with the “States” shirt. NIKE knew exactly what they were doing when they produced that shirt. In my view it was specifically designed to generate protest.

In fact, I view this with even more distain if our players and coaches had no voice in being forced to wear a political protest statement on their chest when trying to focus on soccer and representing our country.

Recall NIKE also abruptly discontinued production of their Susan B Anthony shoe because of a single declaration by Colin Kapernick that the flag is racist.

It’s clear that the promotion and public display of protest athletic wear is important to NIKE, and its to be expected that the delivery systems they use in the way of athletes/coaches are going to carry some of the consequences of those statements. In my view opposing that isn’t ignorant, it’s principled and appropriate.

Re: Responding to the Team USA haters

Nov 25, 2022, 12:38 PM

It really kind of felt like Nike was trying to play it safe, trying to walk a line between the Woke left, which thinks everything should be a socially conscious protest, and the rabid right, that thinks if you aren't waving a flag while brandishing an AR-15 you're somehow a Commie. And they ended up pleasing nobody.

There have been teams making Statements in the World Cup. We may see one from the USA when we face Iran (that's going to be a...charged game, there) and they'll probably act in solidarity with the Iranian team, which has shown some support for the people protesting the Ayatollah's regime in Iran, when we face them on Tuesday.

Past that, the USA has largely done its best to avoid politics and controversy thus far.

It's actually less true than it used to be.

Walker Zimmerman - Dawson Zimmerman's brother - is an elite athlete. (I know the guy, he played at Furman and worked with one of my youth teams for awhile...amazing dude. Intense.) You telling me Thor Junior here couldn't have played football? Dude is a warrior savage. He'd have been elite at anything.

There's a lot more. Tim Weah is an elite an athlete as it gets. He would have been one of the fastest, most agile receivers in the NFL. His dad, George Weah, once won the most coveted trophy in soccer - the Ballon D'Or, given to the world's best soccer player. George is the president of Liberia now...but Tim grew up in New York and stuck with soccer. Watch the highlight video in the original post. He's the guy who scored for the US and just cut through the Welsh defense like they were standing still.

"Jedi" Robinson, our left back, is one of the fastest and most athletic dudes I've ever seen. There's a reason he's called "Jedi".
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ch3vjtF9yMA

It goes on and on. We've got some dudes now, whatever. Some of them are so young they barely shave yet, mind, which could get us crushed against England...but the raw athletes are assuredly there now.

Well, to reinforce the "we don't sukk" argument, our kids just tied England - again, the #5 team in the world and clearly one of the most-talented and complete teams in the tournament - 0-0, and we probably should have won. The USA had the most shots and the most clear-cut opportunities.

Dude, I know you don't follow the game, but anybody can follow money. I don't think a lot of Americans realize just how insane the money that the top soccer players make is or what teams spend on transfer fees (which are just the rights to a guy's contract.)

These are the transfer market values of that England squad our kids came within an inch of beating (and outplayed) today. The values listed are in Euros...which are worth $1.04 dollars to the Euro right now, so actually add 4% to all those numbers. Again, this does not cover these players' salaries, which can be easily double or triple these numbers.

There are multiple guys worth 100 million Euros on this England team, and all of them are worth a bunch.

No, we aren't bad. At all. And this list should give you some idea just why exactly it's so hard to crack into that top level. This is where the rest of the world throws its sports money.

Soccer enthusiasts always point out that it's the most popular sport in the world. And why is that?
1. It's easy to play compared to other sports.
2. It's cheap to play compared to other sports.
3. Great sport for girls since they don't play football and most can't play softball.
4. Most countries do not offer Golf, tennis, football, baseball, swimming, lacrosse etc. Leaving Soccer as the only option.

Nearly EVERY soccer player could easily step into a skill position on a football field and be way above average.

The vast majority of football players (offensive lineman and most all defenders, couldn’t step onto a soccer field and beat any average player/team).

Just because you don’t like the sport, doesn’t mean you actually have a clue. You have no idea the skill involved with keeping a ball at your feet and running around for miles and miles a game.

Athleticism helps in soccer, but it's very secondary

Nov 29, 2022, 5:02 PM [ in reply to Re: Responding to the Team USA haters ]

to skill most of the time. Look at the two best players of this generation.

Christiano Ronaldo was an absolutely phenomenal athlete. He had speed and leaping ability to rival anyone in any sport. He was also tremendously skilled at striking the ball (being a free kick master in his younger days), but when he was in his prime he used his athleticism to great effect, particularly to jump over defenders for headers. The combination of skill and athleticism made him arguably one of the greatest players of all time.

And then you have Lionel Messi who's 5'7, about 150 lbs, and nothing close to an elite athlete in any regard outside of fitness. But he's one of the most skilled players in the history of the sport and possessed an ability to make entire groups of defenders look foolish. If soccer has anything close to the equivalent of being "posterized" in basketball, it's Messi dribbling past 7 defenders and then chipping the keeper.

left it all out there for sure. Miss seeing John Brooks out there in the middle on D but like our young guys. I do NOT like anyone wearing the States shirt. Have seen it before. The US Soccer folks should balk at taking crap like that from Nike, and honestly shouldn't be associated with Nike anyway (my two cents).

The acronym USMNT is offensive. There is no rule requiring participants to be men.

I’m an old guy. Never watched or understood soccer. My nephews talked me into going to Tampa last summer to see 2 premier league teams play. Now I’m hooked. I like that the action is constant. As you watch more you begin to see the strategy as it unfolds. Sure the US is not as good as the top teams but they tied England and came within 2” on winning
The best part to me is with there not being as much down time the game announcers don’t have time to interject their personal opinions or build up the SEC during the game. They stick to the action.

Action? What action? 1-0 final scores? That’s something to sleep through, not action.

There can be plenty of action without goals being scored***

Huge soccer fan. Watched Germany vs Spain yesterday instead of the Panthers. Do not care for the Panthers and there was no other football on. I say that to say I am glad I did tune in. Great game played against 2 top tier teams. Rooney (great English player) is now coaching in the MLS even says soccer in the US has gotten a lot better than other countries believe. Surprised England and they think they are God’s gift to soccer. I took that as a win against those guys.

I grew up playing soccer so to see good soccer being played is fun for myself. I get that some older folks have never been around the game and honestly probably do not understand much of it.

USA women is not a team I care to watch. Too many, all about me with agendas, playing for them right now.

The game today might have ended with the USA winning just 1-0, but it was one of the most exciting games I have seen. Those guys left it all on the field. All Iran had to do was tie the score 1-1 to advance. So, the entire game our guys were protecting that 1-score lead. It was fast-paced.
