he is basing this off a what the coaches are saying and half a dozen plays in the spring game that underwhelmed a lot of us. I am not sure how anyone can make this type of assessment until mid-season.
And as I recall, the coaches did not say one peep about ETN until after they let him out of the bag against Louisville. Then it was like, yeah, we have been saying all along how great this kid was going to be (to ourselves).

If I remember correctly the coaches were real hush hush about Sammy Watkins too. Then the Auburn game happens and everyone knows who he was.

The coaches have been hyping his maturity and the fact that he is a natural leader or a different kind of freshman. At least that is what I gather from their comments.

If anyone from us should be on that list it should be Marcus Tate. Freshman OL possibly starting at left guard. You don’t see too many freshman O lineman at programs of our caliber doing that. (Yes I remember Mitch Hyatt)

Tate and Leigh may be better than Hyatt today. And IMHO Shipley will overperform most TNet expectations to date. Tiger skill sets continue to improve as a team ...

Yeah I remember reading Jeff Scott saying that but that information didn’t come out till later on. If my memory serves me right the coaches weren’t hyping Sammy up like that in the preseason and he wasn’t on a list like this. Could be wrong but I just don’t remember it like that.

Yeah not on lists or anything, I just remember Dabo saying after a practice he was a starter after day 2 maybe 1.

That was not my recollection around Sammy. I seem to remember Dabo saying he was explosive and a game changer early on in camp his freshman year.

Actually I remember Dabo saying after one of the earliest practices that etn was super fast but might be running in the wrong direction!

The kid has more crap on his plate than most. He is expected by "too many" to be GREAT on day one. That must be hard.
At 18, no way could I (maybe not you?) have handled all that attention and expectation. I know it goes with the game. He seems to be a well grounded kid. He has talent.
I lived near Weddington for 30 years. Years back it was a great area where I rode my bicycle on Sundays as there was zero traffic. It aint even a real town. It is more populated now with about 10K. It is near Charlotte. Folks working in Charlotte wanting a more rural and safe place for their family built homes there.
Few are a Spiller, Davis, or Gallman. If he can someday be talked about in a group like that we will all remember when he arrived for the 2021 season.

Great points. I was at the UGA game when Watson got his first series. You know how special that was. The coaches had to be worried about keeping him in and his mental psyche if he suffered a loss in his first game. All the UGA fans around me ( I was surrounded) said we should have kept him in. I think Dabo made the right call though.
Playing RB is a little different. Same with receiver in Sammy’s case. Shipley seems like the kind of guy that can handle it.

Do yall remember where you were when young Watkins hit? He had not arrived on campus till Fall.
I was at a Bob Carver Audiophile weekend near Bryson City. I broke away to watch the game. We could hardle believe what we were seeing in his first game.
Sammy "arrived" in his very first game. All he did as a freshman was catch 82 passes for 1219 yards.

One deal now is Shipley has tons of talent around him. It is not on him to carry the team.

Shipley looks the part on film and he has the frame to play at this level and beyond. Kid seems humble, smart and coachable. Sub 4.5 laser timed 40, soft hands catching the ball, good vision and patient behind blocks. Very rare coming out of high school.
His numbers are very similar to Todd Gurley and Zamir White and he played a higher level of NC football. Had he played his senior year who knows what he could have done.
It’s going to be really hard to keep this kid off the field. I will not be surprised if he gets quite a few opportunistic against UGA. If he gets hot he could stake a claim as the starter quickly just like ETN.
