First, compliments to RK on this article. I thought it was well done. The article reminded me that Dabo is human and experiences the highs and lows of human emotions, just like the rest of us. He has the up and down gyrations in life like anyone else.
I'm also reminded that losing people who are close to you can really drag you down. I think when Jeff and Brad Scott, Tony Elliott, and BV all leave you in fairly short order, that is a lot of trust and experience walking out the door. I believe Dabo thrives when he can operate more as a CEO and those gentlemen took a lot of the day-to-day operations off his plate in order to allow him to do that. Once they left, he had to operate as a COO. He had to get down in the weeds of his football program and he now had to become the man a young and somewhat inexperienced coaching staff looked up to for direction.
In addition, he still had all of his media and community obligations as the "face" of the program. That is a lot of stress and a lot of people tugging at you almost 24/7 and I think it distracted him in some ways from being who he really is. Some like myself saw a personality change. He just didn't seem to be as adept at handling the media and the scrutiny as he had before. It looked like the added pressure was starting to take its toll.
I think bringing back Jeff Scott and maybe even his dad Brad, in some capacity will lighten his load considerably but more importantly, it will surround him with one or two people he knows he can rely on and trust. Garrett Reilly will challenge him in many positive ways. He will be a breath of fresh air in the building and add creativity that has been missing since Chad Morris left. I think Garrett will also be a great mentor for his young offensive coaches and take a lot of that responsibility off Dabo's plate.
In short, Dabo will get his mojo back because he is surrounding himself with good people. As they say, you become who you associate with and I think the inner circle has been upgraded considerably. I would expect to see the old humble Dabo with the great one-liners begin to re-emerge and as a result, his public persona will take a leap forward as well. All of this is for the good of the program, for Clemson University, and for Dabo.
