Seriously, would you take a human life over

Jun 18, 2015, 9:17 PM

your stereo, your TV, your car, your tablet ?

I would mess them up bad , with a ball bat or my raging fist.

But I would not try to kill them over that .

Celtic might find this interesting: it's Begyle Brewing's Maybe Next Year barrel aged imperial brown ale. It's got 9% alcohol and it only comes in a bomber, so I'm looking forward to a little buzz. They age it for 6 months in Heaven Hill's barrels, so it's a very limited release. Set me back $16.

seriously, what are you going to do if someone

Jun 18, 2015, 9:51 PM

breaks into your home, you.. your wife.. your kids there
Trust all they going to do is take stuff, you going to ask them nicely not to do anything else to you or family? And trust them? I think they already showed they aren't trust worthy by breaking in.

Have you ever stood at your door while someone was trying to get in, I have.. as teenager. My job was to protect my mom, my sisters, my 6 yr old brother.. should I have picked up the rifle or asked them not to hurt them?

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That is a good question

Jun 18, 2015, 10:04 PM

But I believe in a
better man (eddie vedder included), if not for that what have we.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not enough info in your scenario to make a call.

Jun 18, 2015, 9:58 PM

If I'm in my home and someone breaks in with a fairly good idea that someone is home, that's not just theft, it's a home invasion. That's a life and death proposition for all participants no matter how idealistic you like to think your beliefs are. A carjacking could very well be considered the same. Pick up my property while my back is turned at public place, then yeah, if I catch you I'm probably going to smack you around but certainly not attempt to kill you. You're probably not going to catch a good car thief anyway, so that's not even a realistic scenario. I think making a general assumption on what you may or may not do without having all the information at your disposal is a pretty futile exercise anyway, don't you think?

ringofhonor-rhtig.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Um, if that's all....no

Jun 18, 2015, 10:06 PM

If they break in and my family is here, I will shoot them if given the opportunity and they aren't ruming away. My home's layout does not afford me the opportunity to hide in a closet and dial 911 or confront to be compromised myself. Then who will defend my family?

Believe what you want but don't try to convince me otherwise.

Jun 19, 2015, 8:33 AM

they are after your stereo and are unarmed....or that they are armed and plan on killing your kids...and then get your stereo.

Pro tip: You can't just shoot burglars.

Jun 19, 2015, 9:23 AM

Not sure if everyone realizes this. In most cases you have a duty to retreat and can only use deadly force if you have no other option. For example:

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/04/29/minnesota-homeowner-kills-teens/8480047/

And

http://www.ktbs.com/story/22365952/homeowner-arrested-after-police-say-he-shot-alleged-intruder

Also you should make sure your gun's legit, because even if the shooting is legal you can end up in jail anyway. Like this guy:

Re: Pro tip: You can't just shoot burglars.

Jun 19, 2015, 9:59 AM [ in reply to Pro tip: You can't just shoot burglars. ]

That's not true anymore. The majority of states don't require you to retreat, especially inside your home. That's called the castle doctrine and it's different than stand your ground laws.

Whether you think the law is a good one or not, there's not a duty to retreat in most places.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No duty to retreat here either. Castle Doctrine

Jun 19, 2015, 10:57 AM [ in reply to Pro tip: You can't just shoot burglars. ]

It even extends through my door across my threshold, if in fact I am in fear of great bodily harm for me and/or family.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well the question was about someone stealing your tv.

Jun 24, 2018, 11:43 AM

correction

That was my response to you.

My response to the OP is below.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

As you said, "if in fact I am in fear of great bodily harm"

Jun 19, 2015, 12:52 PM

If you don't fear for your safety, you can't legally shoot an intruder in your house. It's like you're agreeing with me, but trying to find a way to argue anyway.

The law also depends from one state to another. Not everyone in Tnet lives in SC.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

How could someone break into your house and you not

Jun 19, 2015, 12:54 PM

fear for your safety?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Because they're not necessarily there to kill you?

Jun 19, 2015, 1:32 PM

That's why the laws are written how they're written. If it were reasonable to fear for your life when someone breaks into your house regardless of the circumstances, the law wouldn't need to explicitly say you need to fear for your life because it would be implied.

Did you not see the story I posted about the dude who shot two kids in his basement?

Whatever. Shoot who you want I don't give a ####.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Have you ever had someone break into your home

Jun 19, 2015, 1:38 PM

while you were there? Obviously there are different circumstances and scenarios that may not warrant shooting someone if they broke into your house. However, if my family is home when someone decides to kick my front door in, I'm not going to spend time assessing whether he's there for the tv or their lives.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ok so we agree. Cool.***

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I cannot think of a single scenario that does not warrant

Jun 19, 2015, 2:36 PM [ in reply to Have you ever had someone break into your home ]

shooting someone who breaks into your house. I'm talking legit breaks in, not your kid carded the door because he locked himself out.

Re: As you said, "if in fact I am in fear of great bodily harm"

Jun 19, 2015, 2:28 PM [ in reply to As you said, "if in fact I am in fear of great bodily harm" ]

Don't want to argue.... everyone doesn't live in NJ either and I don't live in SC. You painted the pic with a broad brush it seemed to me....just want to clarify. I'm just a little put out with all the untruths being stated in that last couple of days.

I'm not agreeing with you or disagreeing with you. Just saying that yes, a homeowner can shoot someone that has entered their home to steal their TV IF THEY FEARED FOR THEIR SAFETY and who wouldn't? Personally, I'm not going to ask them why they are here when I confront them, but if they turn and run away, I legally have to let them go. If they are not running towards my kids, then I'll let them go. Are you saying that you don't fear for you safety if someone breaks into your home at 0300?

(unrelated but related) CNN anchor in Charleston just said a gun in the church wouldn't have made a difference. WHAT?! Her counterpart disagreed, but good Lord man.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, I'd shoot the bastage who stole my dock line

Jun 19, 2015, 9:41 AM

in the face if I knew who it was and thought I could get away with it. I ####### hate a thief, home invasions should make you eligible for the death penalty.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-lakebum1-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If you can get intruders to private homes to sign agreements

Jun 19, 2015, 1:36 PM

swearing to God they won't harm me and/or my family then I'll forgo shooting them with a 12ga. Wait, thieves are also liars so that won't work.

Yep, tell all them they are dead sumbiches.
