When I grew up in NC though they hatched every year and were super loud. Almost like a white noise I came to enjoy to sleep.

Different broods come out pretty much every year wherever cicadas are.

TN it’s the 13 year brood or the 17 year. There’s no every year occurrence.

Annual Cicadas. Every dang Summer.

Annual cicada species are those that arrive every year (annually). In the U.S.A., each continental state has at least 4 species of cicadas. California has over 80.

or at least it seems like that's been the case over the last 15 yrs or so.
I've seen a few visual signs (little white larvae looking things) this year but have yet to hear them, like at all.
The nasty looking bee things called Cicada killers do seem to be out in full force, so maybe they are just waiting for cinco de mayo, for CBB to be fired, CDS to pick up a starter from the transfer portal, or another walk on to be awarded a scholly...who knows.

Living there 25 years and am back all the time and have never heard them.
First time that really stuck out was 2004 when I went to Cincinnati and their 17 year brood was out. Air was full of them and the sound was like a nuclear plant siren going off constantly. Never experienced anything like that in the south in my life.

Trust me on this one. Every Summer. Are you hearing this brood now? Maybe so, maybe not. But you will always hear the annual ones every Summer, if you have trees around.

of Greenville has been very different. I've lived here in BW for 17 years and we have had them every year so far here. I lived a few streets over, outside of BW for 16 years before that, and had them every year there. I grew up near Furman, and we always had them there. Many years, especially recently, my wife and I have marveled at how loud they are.
I'm no bug expert, so I have no idear why some always have them and some rarely do. I honestly assumed everybody did.

Sure I’ve heard them at night sounding a lot like high pitched tree frogs—basically just a sound of nature, and maybe you’d see the occasional molted exoskeleton and even more rarely see a live one.
I’m talking about when the broods come out in massive numbers though. The air during the day is thick with them. If you walked from your house to your mailbox, 100+ Of them would fly into you, there are just so many in the air. You can’t walk on the sidewalk or street without them crunching under your feet because so many are on the ground dying. The constant drone, during the day, isn’t like the pleasant calls on a SC summer night, rather it truly sounds like a tornado or nuclear plant siren going non-stop, all day.
I am saying I have never experienced that in my decades in the Carolinas. We just didn’t have these monster broods this far south.

neighbor's front yard, and a "brood" of what must have been 1,000+ poured out of the ground near the base of a huge water oak. But like you, other than that, I've never seen the mid-day sky turn black with them.

They're armed with sticks and trash can lids and are making crazy demands like epi-pens, gloves for their tiny hands, and gluten-free vegan meals.

Just a little crunchy and better with the wings pulled off.
Hear them every year in Greenvegas. Last year had quite a few.
Somehow this 13 yr cycle group coupled with the 17 year cycle is supposed to be super loud, but some definitely emerge in Greenville annually.
