If you want to go super touristy - Coit Tower, Alcatraz (buy tickets before you go, unbelievably scalpers buy them and mark up), ferry to Sausalito. Also an interesting record store in Haight-Ashbury whose name escapes me if you're into the wook scene 
If you like hiking and you have access to a car can go across Golden Gate Bridge and hit up the mountains near Muir Beach
If you like to drink ton of breweries...names escape me though, Black Hammer I believe is one. 21st Amendment there too but I didn't go when I was there so can't vouch for it

drive across the GG bridge, maybe hit up Monterey, Carmel, Pebble Beach, etc. Also Muir Woods.
If in the City only, just see the touristy stuff - Wharf, Coit, Ghirardelli, ride the cable cars, etc.

I rented a car and tried to recreate the Bullitt car chase

I actually did this (not at speed) when I was there during the Clemson-Bama Natty game a few years ago. I was in a Dodge Charger like the bad guys, not a Mustang.
It actually is impossible because it is disjointed in the movie. But I covered as many spots as I could.
Hey, it can kill a couple hours of down time. Driving those steep hilly streets are AMAZING.
