So Dabo agrees with some that Cade isnt seeing the entire field right now, and

9

the issue isn’t this mythological “separation” so many want to cling to.

For the 2nd game in a row I paid very close to the 2nd and 3rd levels to prove again these guys aren’t the 2-star receivers some of you seem to think.

To this point in the season Cade is not yet seeing his better options downfield. On nearly every pass play with optional receivers, Cade is choosing the check down route. He’s a hyper kid and trying to settle himself down. We can see he makes some rushed decisions, and check downs are one of them.

Let’s hope he can get some downfield by game 4.

So yeah, on his call-in show Dabo was asked if separating is an issue. He agrees the issue is Cade seeing all of his options.

I absolutely saw improvement in him from the totality of games 1 and 2. Let’s ratchet it up this week, and have it running one more cylinders in 2 weeks.

It’s scary to think he missed all those open guys. That makes me feel worse than having subpar receivers

So it’s on the QB. Hopefully he can settle down and start seeing the field. Idk how he missed that many open guys. Makes me less confident than I was before I saw this post. Thanks for making my day slightly worse.

I have to disagree on this one. I paid close attention to this last season and there were lots of times when our receivers were all under close coverage. We would sometimes run routes into coverage against zone defenses, rather than finding the holes. I’m not at practice or in the meetings, so I don’t know how much of that problem was wide receiver coaching, and how much was scheme and playcalling. I just know what I saw on the field.

It has been much better through 2 games this year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Even TL16 had to fit balls in tight windows his last year

4

Sep 12, 2023, 3:16 PM

If you rewatch games from TLs final season notice how many difficult throws he has to make vs. hitting guys in stride with space. TL was good enough to throw guys open or put the ball in perfect spots. DJ obviously wasn’t.

If Cade settle down and push the ball downfield to open targets, we’ll start lighting up the scoreboard.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yup, that and quicker reads are needed.

Sep 13, 2023, 4:53 AM

The speed of the game is still scaring Cade, and he hasn’t seen anything yet.

I think we need to run more 1’s vs 1’s with hitting. Ultimate game speed is needed more. You think UGA (for example) hits more in practice? I do. You think Texas played a lot of 1’s on 1’s before playing Alabama? I do.

Injuries are always a concern, but the fact is you can hurt running non-contact drills. There’s a line between developing physicality and practicing to not get people hurt. We need to amp up physicality and game speed for preparation of a week and a half and beyond.

To be fair we did have injuries in the WR room last year, so maybe that contributed. Also, Riley is clearly better at scheming guys open.

WRs werent working hard at all last year especially as the season progressed.***

DJ wasn’t seeing them, and right now Cade isn’t either.

Been arguing for years with Walt Deptula, and now Faxon Childress is pretending he’s watching 2nd and 3rd levels as well.

That pic says it all right there. I love these dudes who say, “we have to scheme them open”, when we’ve had guys open since DJ took over. They’re even more open now, and they’re not quitting routes like they started doing with DJ, simply because they didn’t trust him to get them the ball.

Cade can do this. He’s entirely too wound up (as we’ve seen with him before), and he’ll need to settle down ASAP.

You're very much a rigid stickler for semantics. Ill be better, but i would like to see how many attempts beyond 12 yards Clemson took in that game. I would be surprised if it were more than 3. I think the deep ball was out the gameplan pretty quickly. Dabo said it himself they were playing to not get beat deep.

and make the other team drive the length of the field. The premise - more chances for TO or Offense to screw up and blow-up a drive. Bend don't break. Frustrate the other team O into self destructing. It works, and it worked on us/Cade. This was no surprise going into the game, we have played Mike Elko D quite a few times - we leaned on a gameplan of short passing and running because that is the opportunity his D provides.

Granted, we didn't run a ton of downfield routes against Duke, but Cade did not see open receivers against them, and threw short, hesitated, or into coverage instead. Fact.

Sep 12, 2023, 5:38 PM

I didnt see many open wrs against duke bc there werent many plays called where wrs had an opportunity to even get open. Alot of short drop back and hit the screen or the quick out type plays. Those quick outs are timing and really dont give you much more time than getting through 2 reads. He hit a few of those and had a few dropped.

1

Sep 13, 2023, 4:45 AM

Ball is snapped, you watch the QB, then watch where he throws it.

I don’t believe you’re watching the grand scheme of the routes. That’s where you see Cade missing guys, whether it be on a seam route, a crosser, sideline, post, and fly… he’s just not seeing all of the field.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Come on man, heres how youre watching it -

Sep 13, 2023, 2:48 PM

Im not disagreeing with you, i hope you understand that. Cade needs exposure and expierence he has to slow down a degree. My point is the gameplan vs Duke was mostly horizontal passing and routes that sit in between zones. Those are quick hitters, wrs were running routes to put zone defenders in conflict not just blow by them over the top. There wasnt many shot plays dialed up, maybe that was because of the diasterous shot to the post route on the first drive, i do not know that answer though. I do know i believe in Cade and Riley, truly believe the best football is in front of them.

4 open guys, with at least 2 being WIIIIIIDE open. Now that edge rusher came on pretty quick so I doubt he could have properly set his feet and threw a good pass, but he could have easily hit the other 2 guys closer to him.

So i went back to find this play. Around the 6:39 mark. Cade missed his checkdowns but the 2 guys deep on the left side of the field were running a scissor concept (corner/deep post), they meshed a lil more than they should have and kinda got tangled up, that threw off the timing. fairly certain Cade expected one of those guys to get free(im thinking he wanted the corner route) and when he saw them run into each other he panicked. You can see the deep safety bails early in the play and im guessing hes got the post. The corner would have been beat outside if the wrs hadnt run into each other. This screenshot does not tell the entire story.

No denying Cade missed 2 checkdowns, panicked, and should not have thrown that ball. The play call was nice, the design was nice, the execution from QB to wrs was slop. Cade should have hit the flat to his left once he saw the wrs get hung up and that corner backed up. I can understand why it looks like Cade was staring down his wr, all of his primary reads were on one side of the field. Definitely a panic throw though.

sure, more of that would have been very helpful but it's not allowed by the NCAA. They already do the max. Games are the only way to get better pretty much which is why you often here Dabo talking about how they are the only level without "pre-season" games. I think he would really love to have a pre-season game or be able to schedule a spring game against another school. It's also why the league shouldn't have conf games opening week. If a team chooses to play a quality non-conference that's fine but opening week conf games shouldn't be played.

"Mythologicql separation some want to cling to"... part of the "some" is our own beat writer D. Hood, who put out a big article about this a week ago, how our "problem" is not having top-end speed. He propagated this more than anybody since he is front and center with headlines.

Re: So Dabo agrees with some that Cade isnt seeing the entire field right now, and

I think the clock in his head is spinning too fast and he feels like he needs to quickly release the ball and not realizing he has a little more time. He definitely has happy feet in the pocket and is rolling out of the pocket too quickly which limits his visibility to only one side of the field when he does that.

He made a comment that he was having trouble seeing around his linemen while in the pocket. He is going to have to fix some of these footwork mechanics in order to take the next big step forward. A lot of this is just getting more reps and figuring out the right balance with the timing of his decisions and getting through his progressions. The game is running a little fast for him right now but hopefully, it starts to slow down a bit as he gains more experience and confidence.

On the other hand, since Cade's brain works at a million miles an hour, just imagine how good he is going to be when the game slows down for him, his decisions become natural, yet his brain is still flying at super speed. I predict great things for CK2!
