and went fishing with my sil. we were catching a lot of redfish but they were either to small or too large to keep. we did get 4 keepers including a nice 23 7/8" one to take home. this one was almost 27" long so i reluctantly threw him back.

species there are upper and lower limits on size and number of each that you can keep. also some hefty fines if you're caught outside the limits.

the rationale behind the throwing back the big ones. I totally get throwing back little ones and letting them grow, reproduce, whatever. What's the argument behind not letting anglers keep the big ones?

The smaller fish can't stay on the bed until the eggs...

hatch. I love bass fishing and always take home enough for two good meals. I've only had one fish put on the wall it was a ~12 lb Largemouth which my son caught when he was 8 yrs old. Years ago I'd slay the LM and feed the neighborhood with fresh fish.
Somewhere around the late 1980 early 90s I learned that a 2lb bass would abandon the bed in a day or two so as to feed. Lizards and frogs would eat the eggs negating any possibility that a 2 lb would produce offspring.
The economics is such that the smaller fish have less developed instincts and a new population of fish is thereby destroyed by harvesting the smaller LM.
These laws governing fishing are as right as science and logic will tell us.
