so long story short

haul.jpg(265.4 K)

laid off from my job of 32 years a few months ago (yeah I know, should have done stuff differently)
applied for ~70 jobs with most of them dying at the online application
applied for fulltime onsite, hybrid, and remote jobs all over the US and in Toronto (that city looks sweet)
have a couple of recruiters working for me but nothing yet
either I am competing with lots of applicants, I am too experienced, not experienced enough in certain skills, too old, or maybe I just suck
I think I would have already had a job if I was a retired hispanic vet with a disability
true story, I had multiple Clemson employees tell me that they don't hire old people, unfortunately my old friends are not able to help me get hired
I am going to milk the gov't teet for that sweet (very heavy sarcasm) unemployment check, I only get 14 weeks since the unemployment rate is low so that's good
got a couple years left in alimony payments

on the plus side, going to SanFran in a couple weeks to see the last Dead and Co shows

today, I am telling people that I am between jobs, sounds nicer

I am positive today about my future, my view may change tomorrow

attached pig of my haul this morning of a 1/4 mile of alleyway in Clemson, I should put that on my resume, it proves that I am a hard worker

helpful and nonhelpful funny tips are welcome!

They say age discrimination doesn't exist.

But anyone over about ~48 who has applied to jobs they are qualified for knows that to be simply wrong. It's rampant.

Good luck to you.

It really is.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And it really makes no sense to me.

6

Jun 29, 2023, 11:11 AM

Lets say someone is...60. They want to work a few years and either retire, or maybe stay on. Whatever.

How long do they think someone who is younger will be around? Someone <40 won't be a in a job 2-5 years then move on to make more money.

Never made sense to me. Plus..the older folks are more loyal, more likely to work longer hours if needed, and usually know their subject better. One of the last guys I hired, when I could do that sorta thing..was 60. He was awesome. Always available, knew his stuff, and had some extra experience on some oddball old technology we had (but nobody else did anymore) and was invaluable to that. I got changed to another department, and about 6 months later his new manager laid him off.

All managers should care about the bottom line...

1

Jun 29, 2023, 3:26 PM

it's just a question of timing.

If you focus on the bottom line for tomorrow only and don't think about the future, then you do stupid stuff.

All/most businesses are there to make a profit, so thinking about the bottom line isn't a bad thing. It's just a matter of how you get there.

Also, someone who is 50 might work to even over 70, depending on the job. It's not like they won't get a lot of years out of these people.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I've seen this play out more times than I can count now

6

Jun 29, 2023, 11:46 AM [ in reply to And it really makes no sense to me. ]

Experienced guy either gets straight up let go, or is "encouraged" to leave through a variety of methods. Then it's oops, experienced guy did a lot to keep things running.

Usually they either power through it with many growing pains, or end up having to hire the guy back as a contractor paying him more than they were originally.

I'm working on a project at a company right now where they basically forced a guy out by giving everyone raises but him, because the new plant manager didn't like how much he was making. He didn't have a degree you see, so how could they be paying him that much?! Well unfortunately, that guy over the span of 30 years built almost every electrical panel in the plant, and did most of the controls.

So not only are they f*cked when something goes down, they don't have anybody in house to do that sort of thing on new projects. He's probably making triple as a contractor now.

My other favorite is the company who fired their older, in house tool and die guys. They can just buy that stuff and cut those relatively high paying positions, totally made sense to the (I assume) MBA 750 miles away. Well that was all good up until it wasn't. Oops, lead times on those tools are 6 months now and nobody is in house to make them. :(

I put most of this squarely on the shoulders of business majors.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-lakebum1-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You would think by now the failures of cost cutting measures

4

Jun 29, 2023, 12:13 PM

over the years by various MBA types would be well documented and taught in business schools all over the land.

The first area I can think of is farming out, or sometimes just eliminating, is parts of the company that require tribal knowledge and experience to do right...like IT. Usually...these are the areas that the primary production of the bottom line revenue require to get the job done correctly.

I've seen IT get pushed out overseas or basically eliminated so many times over my career that it amazes me when the "business" still attempts to do this to save a dollar. Every industry i've been in still tries it with the same underwhelming success.

We're sending all our stuff to India as fast as we can...and we wonder why the costs go up but the product quality goes down. It's pretty amazing to me to watch the knowledge destruction occur while we fire anyone over 50 to make sure they don't cost too much as a priority over actually making money by providing the service that we sold.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: You would think by now the failures of cost cutting measures

3

Jun 29, 2023, 12:47 PM

You are missing the aspect of who wins and loses.

MBA cuts costs and he wins.

6 months or a year later the business is suffering so the business loses.

That's not the MBA's problem. He's gotten his credit and moves on.

There's also a business case for "We're going to do X. No exceptions" and expecting people to power through and keep things working.

A better manager would have set things up so that wasn't an issue.

and hiring someone as a contractor for 3 times what they were making doesn't matter at the VP/financial statement level because they are different buckets of money.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Best I can tell, the people who make these decisions never

4

Jun 29, 2023, 12:52 PM [ in reply to You would think by now the failures of cost cutting measures ]

really stick around long enough to deal with the fall out. They get a few quarters of on paper successes, then either leave voluntarily or get forced out as things start to fall apart. Then they bring someone in to fix the mess, which goes OK for awhile until some number puncher decides they're spending too much money. Rinse and repeat.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-lakebum1-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This is the reality.

2

Jun 29, 2023, 3:56 PM

Since no one stays at a job linger than about 3-5 years any more, when the "chickens come home to roost", those responsible for the mess they created already got their bonuses and have long since moved on to do it somewhere else...thinking they made a positive change because they keep getting rewarded for it.

All while actually leaving a trail of carnage and failure in their wake.

ChatGPT actually does a fair job editing resumes on the fly

tell it the job you are applying for (c/p description), then tell it to optimize your resume to that position.

No retyping of everything, maybe just some mild editing.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They just don't want to pay you what you're worth.

2

Jun 29, 2023, 12:19 PM

They'd rather take someone who is half as good at the job and bank the difference that would make on their bonus checks.

I went through that at ~50 years old. I graduated late so when I interviewed I could tell by the look on their faces that they didn't want me. Not because of my age but the fact that I wasn't going to work as cheap as a unmarried 35 year old.

And if you don't have a job, well, you gotta do what you gotta do.

I keep a required salary number in my head on the y axis vs how long I am out of work on the x axis..and can pretty much plot that line as needed as it descends downward.

Re: I get that, but sometimes, some income is better than none

2

Jun 29, 2023, 12:49 PM

Even if you'd take less, management doesn't want to hire you because they expect you will leave as soon as you get a better opportunity.

It's part of being overqualified for a position.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

let's ask chatgpt

5

Jun 29, 2023, 12:30 PM

Here are a few ideas:

Sell belongings: Look around your home for items, such as concert posters, you no longer need or use and consider selling them through online platforms like eBay, Craigslist, or local buy/sell groups.

Rent out assets: If you have assets such as a spare room, parking space, or a car that you don't use frequently, you could rent them out to generate extra income. Platforms like Airbnb (for renting out a room) or Turo (for renting out a car) can help with this.

Participate in online surveys or tasks: There are websites and apps that pay you to complete surveys, watch videos, or perform small tasks. While the pay may not be substantial, it can provide some extra cash. Examples include Swagbucks, Survey Junkie, or Amazon Mechanical Turk.

Sell body fluids: Blood, plasma, #####, are all popular options. Did you know that you can also sell sweat, urine, feces, and flatulance?

Offer freelance services: If you have marketable skills, consider offering your services on freelance platforms like Upwork, Fiverr, or Freelancer. Writing, graphic design, prostitution, programming, drug smuggling, murder for hire and virtual assistance are some popular categories.

Gig work: Sign up for gig economy platforms like Craigslist, Uber, Lyft, TaskRabbit, Backpages, or Instacart to find short-term jobs or gigs that suit your abilities and schedule.

Rent out your belongings: If you have tools, fleshlights, equipment, or other items that people may need temporarily, you can rent them out through platforms like Fat Llama or RentNotBuy.

Remember, these methods may not provide a consistent or substantial income, and they might not be viable for long-term financial stability. It's important to continue seeking permanent employment opportunities while exploring these options.

If you are not on linkedin, get on linkedin.

It's somewhat like social media where people you haven't seen in 20 years will be suggested to add you as a contact and it can help with networking.

Re: yep, into linkedin and lots of people came out in support

Jun 29, 2023, 3:40 PM

All I can tell you is keep in touch with your contacts every few weeks until you find something.

I was laid off for over a year and kind of lost touch with people after so long. When I announced I had finally found a job, a couple of people responded with:

"####, we were hiring 6 months ago. I'd assumed you'd already found something since I hadn't heard from you in so long."

So hit people up with a "here's what's going on in my life and still looking for a job" every month or so.

I don't know if your line of work is recession proof, but a lot of industries have boom and bust cycles.

They quickly go from can't hire enough people to layoffs and short staffed and then back to hiring when the work recovers. Hopefully you can ride it out.

Depending on your skill set, you could also consider contract work which can sometimes lead to full time positions.

I have lamented the fact for years that Rock Hill hasn't had an iconic hot dog since The Varsity closed down. The best dogs in town right now are at the Sunoco up the road from me. Two dogs Debbie's way, every time. Hot Dog Depot has somewhat decent dogs, but you have to be headed to Chester before it's worth a ride out that far, and their attempt at a Chicago dog is an insult to the Windy City.
