So what you’re saying is that we are stuck in the ACC?

Jul 3, 2022, 10:00 PM

After reading the lawyers abridged version of the GOR below- we have no feasible way out of the ACC and into another conference unless that conference wanted us really badly. Are we and our brand worth it to the SEC and Big10?

I think that depends largely on if this takes a while to play out. The closer we get to 2036 the more likely it is we make it. Otherwise if this happens within a few years we may be in serious trouble and embroiled in a legal battle you mentioned we have little chance to win but no choice but to fight.

Dang who got us into this mess. The DOR might as well be dead because staying in the ACC as it is right now financially is athletic suicide.

If SEC sees positive value from their upcoming new ESPN rights agreement they can in effect loan Clemson the ACC exit fee, then repay themselves by a yearly reduction in the annual fee they pay Clemson, NC State etc. The negotiated Clemson rights appear to have a value of between $50-100 million. When new annual payouts will eclipse $100 million each year to each member so the impact over say 5 years would only be a reduction of 10-20 million, much less a deficit than Clemson would see if still in that ACC rape agreement.
If SEC sees value in doing so, it will be done and quickly.

I believe the chances are better that there will be a mass defection from the ACC and what remains of the conference will be absorbed into the survivor of the PAC12 or B12. I don’t see 3 power conferences existing on the East Coast. Two will dominate the landscape, leaving the other irrelevant.

With that said, a lot of rumblings that the SEC is working with both Clemson and FSU to negotiate a buyout from the GOR. But who knows what is true and what isn’t with all these rumors at this point?

The supreme commander, Greg Sankey wants, and will get 4 new members. 20 gives him his super conference that will allow him to forever change the very nature of college football.
I see all in one big grab. Clemson, Nc State, Va Tech and FSU.
I put that as a reality within 60 days at a 90% probability. The public doesn't know but a deal of that scope involving those schools is underway. NOW!
He then turns to ESPN and together they go hard to beat BiG/Fox combo to the tune of billions of dollars over next 10-15 years. His strategy plays heavy on future streaming revenues, not cable or broadcast. His SEC war chest buys back GoRs and new members in effect repay SEC each year thru decreased annual payouts.

one final comment. if you are a traditionalist in many ways you will not like much of what is to happen in college athletics.
Football will no longer be a part of the NCAA. Much of the current oversight and regulation will be amended or scrapped. The concept of student-athelete will look very different, NIL is a leading indicator. The sport on the field will see changes designed to enhance audience approval. Games may become shorter to fit within new time concepts, clock may not stop on incompletions, etc.
As Bobby Dylan told us long ago, The Times they are a Changin'. Prophetic that Bob.
