Dabo cannot afford

to start Pearman ahead of Klubnik and Vizzina - even if he's the best option.

If he does, he risks both Klubnik and Vizzina hitting the transfer portal, which would leave us with no QB if Pearman was injured. Not a good position to be in.

Does that statement make sense to you? If he is the best he
would be the starter and Dabo wouldn't let the other two
change his decision even if they threatened to transfer.
Bottom line, Pearman isn't the best but he is very good.

That argument doesn’t hold water. Dabo will play whoever earns the job. Even if it’s John Doe as a walk-on and wins the job. He cannot afford to not start the best player. Vizzina didn’t transfer after sitting on the bench last year. He may decide to leave. Klubnik may decide to leave. That’s ok too.

I don't think Pearman is actually a better QB than Klubnik at this point, but if he is, I think Dabo would play it like he has previously when the backup eventually replaces the starter:

1. He will say that the QB competition has been great, the QB room is deep, etc.
2. He will build up the backup, say that he's improving and could win games for us, but say that he isn't ready.
3. He will build up the starter as the guy who gives us the best chance to win, has meaningful experience, has been in the program longer, etc.
4. He would get defensive when the media asks about a QB controversy and questions the starting QB. He would double down and say that the starter is the starter.
5. He would gradually begin playing the backup another series or two.
6. He would ultimately announce the backup as the starter.

I think Dabo loves Cade perhaps more than he's ever loved a QB. Cade is like a mini Dabo and they have a special bond. It would take a lot for Dabo to do anything to remove Cade as the starter.

We've seen this even in how Dabo treats the position currently. Vizzina barely played last year. Dabo showed no interest in going after another QB in the portal to be a backup, and certainly not to challenge Cade for the starting job.

Bottom line: the job is Cade's and it would likely take an injury to Cade for that to change.

I pretty much agree with you 100%. I rember Dabo’s unwillingness to pull the trigger on replacing DJ, even though it was obvious that DJ wasn’t getting it done. That stubbornness probably cost us, but we only can speculate. I just hope that Dabo makes the right decision quickly, rather than it costing us games and status.

Judge is spot on with this assessment. Dabo and Cade are kindred spirits. It was very obvious that when cade seemingly underthrew Randall on the easy pick. Dabo immediately cut the announcers off and said it was on Randall... that Randall ran the wrong route, yada yada. Who knows really, but it certainly stuck out to me.

The announcers were even saying it was a disguised coverage that Randall missed. It was an option route that Randall misread as man & not cloud 2. Randall should’ve cut back and that’s where the ball was being thrown to.

Lol I feel the exact opposite. He was harder on Cade then any other QB under him. DJ was the only QB I recall him coddling. I've never seen Dabo outright blame a player for a loss the way he did with Cade last year. FSU game they basically put that on Cade for not handing it off, Miami he called Cade out in the media for the last play(That's not something I've ever seen Dabo do), there were several other times. It was like Dabo did not like Cade.

But Dabo didn’t start Cade over DJ even with DJ struggling as much as he did.

Once again, the truth doesn’t fit your Dabo criticizing narrative.

Dabo risks losing the team if he's obviously not playing the best player at the most important position.

Now, is Pearman 'obviously better' than CV or CK? I doubt it. Not consistently at least and certainly he hasn't shown it in the fires of actual competition.

But *IF* Pearman is the best player, then IMHO you play him and let the backup QB situation play itself out however it will. Worst case I figure only one of the guys (CV or CK) will transfer and while that's not great, not playing the best player is worse long term.

Dabo lost last year's team as the season started

Apr 12, 2024, 11:33 AM [ in reply to On the other hand... ]

The players & coaches talked a great game headed into the season as they coasted with little leadership from 5th & 6th year seniors and upperclassmen. The team was roughed up and beat by an average Duke team with better leadership, lost a close one to FSU with all FSU players healthy, and lost to average Miami and NCSU teams. Then Dabo pulled the team back together vs. ND and won out.

Hopefully, some lessons were learned and young leaders were forged along the way. IMHO this year's team is young, but in a better position, with Year 2 of Riley as OC and Matt Luke's o-line leadership. Excited about this young and talented Defense.

My guess would be that Dabo thinks Cade is our best option.

If he doesn't believe that and is starting him anyway, he would be doing a disservice to the team, the fans, Pearman, Klubnik and Vizzina.

So based on that logic, you do not reward performance? My company allowed employees after covid to have excessive absence, take long breaks, and simply not perform. This was done to reduce turnover. This is different professions, but the result is the same. We now have a new plant manager and HR director. The previous administration made bad choses. You play the best guy or you keep the good employees. Do not manage scared!!

I hate this mindset: it's so unfair

1

I understand your point, but I think what Dabo really cannot afford to do is to run his program according to that type of logic because it would be detrimental to the long-term culture and stability of the team. The best players should play, regardless of status, popularity, or any other selfish influences. After all, that's what Dabo is all about, and doing the opposite of that would go directly against his whole philosophy. To put it simply, Dabo cannot allow himself to be held hostage by Cade or Vizzina threatening to leave. If Pearman is truly Clemson's best quarterback, he should start. And if that means Klubnik and Vizzina enter the portal, so be it and good riddance. That's the short-term price you have to pay for the long-term health of your culture. Otherwise, think about the message that sends to the rest of the players. If you're a walk-on or a lower ranked prospect, even if you actually become better than a highly-touted prospect or a popular player, you still won't be able to pass him on the depth chart because the coaches are afraid of making the popular player mad and then losing him to the portal.

If that's the case, why should anyone even bother working hard? Why even bother trying? Because no matter how hard the back-ups work, they'll never be starters, and no matter how poorly the starters play and how selfish they are, they'll never be benched. Don't you see the message that would send? Don't you see how bad that would be for the culture? And even beyond perception, it's just so grossly unfair that it almost makes me sick. Sports is supposed to be about success based on what you EARN through your performance. Not about how popular you are or what type of status you have, or being able to rest on your laurels from some old performance. Your reputation should be earned on the field in every current moment. Otherwise, why do we even play?

Failing to be fair to the other players out of fear of upsetting the stars seems like the most anti-Dabo thing a coach could possibly do. His whole culture is based on teamwork, selflessness, sacrifice, and that if you are loyal to the program, the program will be loyal to you. If you do the right thing, you will be rewarded. If you earn a spot, it WILL be given to you, regardless of if you're a 5-star or a walk-on. I'm not saying that I know that Trent Pearman is better than Klubnik and Vizzina. But if he is, I sincerely hope that Dabo won't hesitate to make him the starter out of fear of the other 2 quarterbacks leaving the program. I don't think Dabo would do that, first of all, and I think he'd be betraying himself if he did.

Well said - and I actually agree with it. Perhaps instead of saying that Dabo can't afford making Pearman the starter I should have said that if he did it could cause negative reactions from the other QBs and the choice would put Dabo in a pickle.

I'm not saying that Pearman is the best QB either - just that if he is, it could be (not would be) trouble one way or the other.
