I pretty much missed that era on the rock side, so I don't got a dog in the fight. My favorite niece was a Def Leppard junkie, so I'll make them the first entry.
Myself, strictly as a comedy piece, I am partial to Twisted Sister's "We're not Gonna Take It" video.

Sister ? Did they ever make to headliners ? They were only HOT for about 6 months.Leader Of the Pack killed them , in fact Love Is For Suckers proved them and Winger/RATT producer didn't match.
Crue ? Outside of a few singles, their albums lacked.
Poison ? 3 good albums ,4th one took a dive.
Ratt ? 5 good albums,then they imploded

loved Glam/Hair Metal. They just watered it down,signing every single band that looked like GnR or Bon Jovi,regardless of whether they were good or not. Grunge didn't kill 80's Music, the record labels did.

Oh forgot about Warrant. That’s a good one. Also liked Winger (I’m a lady so I had a crush on their front man). Aerosmith, if you consider them a hair band. Ratt and Cinderella were pretty good too.

they were the band that laid the foundation and effectively started the genre. Some will argue that it was actually Hanoi Rocks or the New York Dolls, but they never really had the commercial success.

I'm probably wrong but I consider Van Halen the original hair metal band and would say they were my favorite.

just a studio band. Most of them are still together. And, I saw them in concert. They were excellent and sounded great.
IMO, "Ordinary World" is their best song instead of their earlier stuff. That song showed great maturity in their music.
