Selling Silver

Where can I get a reputable price to sell silver? Wife has a fancy silverware set that's been passed down a few generations. As far as wife can guess, it hasn't been used in 40+ years.

Is it more valuable at meltdown price, or try to sell online to someone that may want the actual set?

We're stopping the ridiculous tradition of passing it down to family members that don't want it.

FYT (this is the best I could find):

sterling silver has some value. silver plated does not.

just posted about this a while back. We only had a few pieces of sterling, so we're keeping it for now. Took a box full of silver plated serving pieces, coffee pot, platters, etc to Goodwill.

I don't know where to sell sterling, but it's probably not as valuable as you think. Nobody wants it.

this is my point. My mother has a giant, gorgeous antique mahogany breakfront china cabinet that she and my dad purchased on a trip to New Orleans. It's full of crystal glasses, china, silver and all manner of expensive hand me downs. And for me (and my brother) it's one of two things.

A thing we keep to honor our mothers memory and probably pay to store somewhere disassembled, or, money.

Traditional quality furniture is going that way too.

solid wood, dovetail joints, dowels, hand rubbed finish, 8-way hand-tied coil springs, demand is dropping for that stuff. None of our kids want any of our furniture.

At least furniture is useful and necessary, unlike fancy silver and china.

Three things...

One, people are making modern stuff that is assembled elegantly, See Thuma beds.

Two, most of the American stuff that is that way, that our parents own, is kind of out of style for us.

Three, these days people want to redecorate so often that they just buy cool looking, but mostly disposable furniture from IKEA.

I agree with those 3. But mostly

people want modern style and inexpensive. I don't care for really old ornate furniture (except to look at), but I do like mid-century furniture. Even the manufacturers that you never heard of, or no brand is on there, is quality well built stuff. But if you set a glass on it without a coaster, it will leave a ring, and that is ridiculous to people these days.

Speaking of silver...

Is silver and china still what it was to the Boomers and earlier generations? My mom owns all this stuff that she spent money on and amassed that I don't have a ton of interest in. If my great, great grandmother's silver teaspoon is going to just sit in a drawer tarnishing until I make my kids have to deal with it, what's the point?
