I actually knew Frank Howard personally. He was a friend of my family. I know a great deal about him and have a lot of respect for his tenure at Clemson.
You are cherry picking things to dress up his record. I understand the need to do that because he is a Clemson icon.
Nobody wants to be an iconoclast.

he also had some significant bowl wins.pales in comparison to danny and dabo,but all in all a pretty decent coach.well above average.for whatever reason,even back in the 50's and 60's CU didn't get the recognition that the sacred cows of college fb were gifted with.

he had only 9 seasons in which Clemson won 7 or more games.
His best win was probably over TCU in the 1959 Bluebonnet Bowl. He played #1 LSU tight in a loss in The Sugar Bowl with pretty much the same squad as the year before.
He never beat a really great team or a program with any sort of longstanding history and tradition like Georgia, Bama, Auburn, Oklahoma, Southern Cal, etc.
Certainly he faced extenuating circumstances such as WWII and the ACC 800 rule.
Most of his wins were over ACC teams and the Presbyterians and Furmans on the schedule.
He was a fine coach and when he had great players, he had some pretty nice seasons and beat some good teams.
I love Frank Howard. I think he was great for Clemson.
I just don’t get people who think his record overall at Clemson was anything much more than mediocre.

And he was given 1 year with a Complete Misfit at QB. DJ should have played in a Pro Style Offense. Additionally, Dabo made promises to DJU and his Family (Bad Idea) -or- he was extorted to keep playing him! And yes, I’m still BiITTER about the Loss to the SHAMECOCKS!!!!!

It was totally his offense.. custom made for DJU.
No, it wasn't great, but that's because it was so limited due to the QB. As it was, that custom offense was a fumbled punt and 20 yards from making the playoffs and a top 4 finish.
The offense was a good design, and made as much as possible with a broken QB. Kudos to Streeter for devising the offense and taking us to the cusp of the playoffs, even with the crippling handicap we had at QB.

Football pays the bills and the people. Basketball is not abysmal under Brownell. It's typical Clemson basketball results historically. And sadly, that's good enough for the school.

Brownell does not have the best talent in the ACC. And who could come to Clemson and out recruit
Duke, UNC, Virginia and several other teams in the ACC?

I agree with what you're saying, but Virginia doesn't belong on the list that gets all the recruits. That's what makes Tony Bennett's coaching ability impressive. They may have 4 star talent, but not all the 5 star recruits Duke and Carolina get. Bennett is not going to blow you away offensively, but they defend every inch of the floor.

It's not about recruiting and other excuses like that. It's the fact that after 13 years we know good and well The program is not going to move forward under Brad. It's just gonna be the same year after year, we need a coach who can bring some excitement and move the program forward.
