Ok, Strength Of Schedule Killed Us ....

Therefore, lets play some good teams OUTSIDE of our regular conference schedule ... yes, its a gamble, but you gotta do this to build credibility ...
May I suggest VCU (THAT, would draw a big crowd) UNC-Asheville - good team great local interest Florida (obvious) James Madison University (I like Harrisonburg, Va)
What say YOU?

Yep a loss to VCU would be more impressive than a win over Coastal.

It's not even a gamble. If we had just LOST to two top 10 teams on the road instead of losing to Auburn and Arkansas, our strength of schedule would be 40-50 spots higher than it is now. The rpi is easily manipulated, but we don't take advantage of that with our scheduling.

Strength Of Schedule.

was not the problem. It was losing the games on the schedule— UMass., Ark. & Aub
I actually thought Ark. was better than they turned out, although they did beat UK twice

Winning those games would have been nice, but we didn't have to win them to make the tournament. Comparing our schedule with NC State's schedule, the only difference is that NC State played (and lost) to better teams.

If we beat UMass and Pitt, we're probably in the tournament. There are more than enough teams on our schedule where if we only would have beaten them, we would have been invited to the dance.

The scheduling this year was weaker on purpose

coming off a bad year, young team with no seniors and a completely inexperienced frontcourt. They needed to build confidence in the pre-conference schedule and they did. Only one bad loss and that was Auburn. Also didn't help that a traditionally strong team in Temple had their worst season in years and your in-state rival who you play every year was atrocious. Next year, with us being back in the ACC/B1G challenge and again gaving 3 SEC teams on the schedule and what should be a decent tournament in Puerto Rico, pre-conference RPI should be much better. Personally, I have no problem playing a team like Furman every year as they are one of our traditional opponents. And as long as Cliff is at Coastal, they will probably be on our schedule.

You can still schedule teams that you should beat but aren't RPI killers.

softer. How many times in the past have we seen teams we should beaten like an Elon, Winthrop, Coastal, even SC State one year under Shyatt beat us? This year we scheduled some dregs no doubt, but I do believe we did that to insure wins and avoid that upset loss that could have occurred had we scheduled a better mid-major program like COC or one of the projected better Southern or Big South schools. Next season, I still expect to see Furman and Coastal there as we're going to play them, but would expect to see teams like Stetson, Delaware St, VMI and maybe even SC State replaced by better low majors because we'll have a better, more experienced team

I don't think it was SOS as much as a few bad losses

and some bad officiating....
If we win Arkansas, Auburn, Wake, and can beat Pitt that puts us at 24-8 and in the tourney.

My opinion is the team needs to play in some bigger early season tournaments. Get in a tournament with teams from the big 10 or pac 12. If you lose 1. its a pre-season/early season tournament and not that big a deal 2. Losing to a team like Arizona or Michigan even in a early round is better than losing to UMASS even if it was a championship game. If Clemson would have been in the ACC/ Big 10 battle this year would have been a chance for a very good resume building OOC game as well. I agree losing to a top 25 team early in the year is better than playing some of these scrubs that are currently on the schedule. I know they want to support local smaller programs in and around the state but you have to look at the big picture and make decisions that betters our team and post season potential.

You can only play in one tournament a year.unless you're

involved in one of the preseason deals, and those are by invitation only. Next season we're in the Paradise Jam tourny in Puerto Rico with the likes of Illinois(B1G), LSU(SEC), and Seton Hall(Big East), along with some mid and low majors. Pretty standard to try to have 4 schools from major conferences and 4 from smaller in these tournaments

Well we need to be lobbying to play one of the teams from a major conference school in that tournament. Also, doesn't our final rank in the ACC guarantee us a spot in the ACC vs. Big 10 match ups in the beginning of the season? That would be big RPI boost to start the season.

In observance of the 50 years since the Beatles great album I think we should have a "Magical Basketball History Tour", that being a schedule that is full of ONLY schools with a history of at least SOME success in the NCAA tournament. The ACC is loaded with those, so one need only look outside the conference to get games with Georgia, Davidson, Charlotte, Tennessee, VCU, George Mason, Jacksonville, UAB, Auburn, Alabama, Georgetown, Navy, West Virginia, ... and that's just a starter list of those somewhat close by.
