He was a great man.
"What a cruel thing war is... to fill our hearts with hatred instead of love for our neighbors."
"It is good that war is so horrible, or we might grow to like it."

It's part of a memorial, and part of the very fabric of the university. To do so would be to go all in on revisionism, which leads to a Pandora's box at the end of a rabbit's hole. I can't envision a school as deeply rooted to Lee and as academically prestigious as it is wanting to go down that path.

There should be a display of American flags at his tomb. He was a great American soldier before the war, and was in fact asked to lead the union army before accepting the offer to lead the army of his beloved Virginia. I'm not sure how he got involved with Washington University, but I'm sure it was an honorable relationship before before the school was renamed.

Lee was offered the position of President of the College

by its administration after the war. This is after Lee had turned down many lucrative financially opportunities and estates overseas. He saved and transformed Washington College from a failing college to a forward thinking university. He established journalism programs, a business school and a law school.
These "oppressed" people need to understand that without Lee, there would be no law school at Washington and Lee. Lees original three year contract was extended until he passed away because he had done such a wonderful job with repopulating and reforming the school after the Civil War took a large majority of its population of students.

I'm sure Lee, after protesting the idea of a memorial in the first place, would have welcomed the idea himself. But his friends, family, and, most importantly, his native Virginia fought on the side of the South.
Some of the flags in Lee Chapel are replicas of those of the troops under his command. Some are simple battle flags of the Confederacy - of which Lee's ties are most known for.
A combination of the two would be an appropriate and proper memorial, I think. From what we know of the man, Lee loved God & family first, his Virginia second, and his nation - each of them for a time - third.

Lee was posthumously granted US citizenship and the flags on his grave should reflect the nation of his birth and reconciliation.

Being part of KA, whose first chapter was at the former

Washington College (Now Washington and Lee), this really angers me. Lee was a man that was selfless in every way possible and loved God more than anything else in his life. He was a genius on the battlefield and as peaceful as a newborn in prayer.
Robert E. Lee saved the failing Washington College and expanded its curriculum to ensure that it would be a thriving college for years to come.
This is the Definition of a Gentleman, composed by Robert E. Lee himself:
"The forbearing use of power does not only form a touchstone, but the manner in which an individual enjoys certain advantages over others is a test of a true gentleman. The power which the strong have over the weak, the employer over the employed, the educated over the unlettered, the experienced over the confiding, even the clever over the silly — the forbearing or inoffensive use of all this power or authority, or a total abstinence from it when the case admits it, will show the gentleman in a plain light. The gentleman does not needlessly and unnecessarily remind an offender of a wrong he may have committed against him. He can not only forgive, he can forget; and he strives for that nobleness of self and mildness of character which impart sufficient strength to let the past be but the past. A true man of honor feels humbled himself when he cannot help humbling others."
KA's and gentleman across the country strive to exude the same principles which General Lee possessed during his life. If more of us were like the man that General Lee was during his lifetime, we wouldnt be in nearly as much trouble as we are now.
These people need to learn the truth behind the man and stop associating him solely with the losing effort during the American Civil War. Yes, the Confederate flag has ties to the KKK and white supremacists groups across the nation, but have these kids researched what the flag stood for upon is first stitching? Do they know the difference between the Battle Flag or the First National? If we were to show them the Second or Third National and compare to the First National, would they say they are equally offensive? Probably not, solely for the fact the First does not have the battle flag associated in its corners?
These kids at Washington and Lee need a history lesson and they need to understand where the namesake of the school came from. If you were offended by the history behind the school and the campus, you shouldnt have chosen to attend the university.

I was in it for 2 and a half years. Therefore, $3500 for the entire time if my math is correct.
I do not regret one penny that I invested in it. I had great times with the friends I made and had some experiences that I will cherish for my entire life. I helped build our chapter back to what it used to be and we got a house this past year and I would like to think that some of my efforts helped with that.

Fraternity and half out. Our dues were pretty cheap, just enough to pay National. It was an overall bad experience because in the push for numbers we ended up with two distinct groups of people. They did not get along, I grew tired of trying to teach one side to be smart about things and the other side to leave people alone.
To me, if being in a Fraternity never leads to getting a job, it isn't worth it.

Dues were used to pay nationals and do large events like our "Old South" and fundraising events like a band party.
Anything else (read: beer) came out of pocket.
I didnt get a job from being in KA, but I met some amazing people throughout North Carolina that are KA's. Half of my good friends came from KA half didnt. I never backed myself that far in that I refused to meet anyone outside of KA.
