Sunday Sermon: Destiny's path or its master?

Nov 1, 2015, 6:32 PM

A crowd of orange-clad fans were standing outside the north gate at Carney-Finley Stadium. It was a long game, and the general feeling was one of half-celebration, half-relief.

Celebration over a road win -- tougher than expected, perhaps, but impressive. Relief that a major question had been answered by the Tigers.

What will we do if the defense falters? What happens when that team that eviscerated Miami, throttled GTech and stood toe-to-toe with Notre Dame has an off night? What happens when someone has a great game against us?

The Silverbacks have seen it before. We sit around the fires at night, telling tales of greatness achieved and much more missed. And no matter how much self-assuring can be found Youtube videos, in Jack and Coke, in the evidence before our own eyes ... like Thomas in the inner room, a man must see to believe.

Saturday night, we saw. Now do ye believe? We can misfire on offense, as Louisville proved out, and hang on with our defense. We can stumble on defense as proven in Raleigh, and simply overwhelm our foes.

And when both are clicking ... God pity those in our path.

Still, the door of destiny is tough to enter, for good reason. If not, any Tom #### and Capon could saunter up and claim its bounty. A few times, Clemson has gotten this close, only to be turned aside.

Why? Because for so many times, we have tried to follow destiny's path. And that, friends, is a path for fools. Destiny is no respecter of those who try to stroll along a path others trod before them.

Clemson, finally, is a team of destiny. Not because we stumbled onto the footpath, but because we have worked and sweated and bled for it. Years ago, this staff picked up a machete, cursed the mosquitoes and gnats, embraced the suck and begun hacking our own trail. A trail that fits Clemson and no one else.

This is our path. This is our destiny. Saturday afternoon, we have the opportunity to grab destiny by its feathered headdress and ram a flaming spear down its throat. Erase a generation of demons and doubters, turn the war chant to wailing.

With a win Saturday the worst ... the VERY worst ... this team can do is play for the ACC title.

The best we can do? Destiny awaits, Clemson. It needs a master.

We are the men for that task. Saturday will be the time to prove ourselves. And God pity those in our path.

Because we will not.
