Sunday sermon: Return of the Righteous

We begin with a brief reading from Jeremiah, Chapter 50:
Summon archers against Babylon, all those who draw the bow. Encamp all around her; let no one escape. Repay her for her deeds.
Less than a week from now, the Sons of Clemson return. Yet, for quote some time, we have known that this day, this team, is more than simple resumption.
It is regeneration. It is restoration.
It is retribution.
Saturday evening, the world will witness the return of the Righteous. Those who wandered in the wilderness of football famine, or inexplicably stepping away from the banquet table and the feast placed before them.
"Not yet," they seemed to say. "It isn't time."
Are we really going to let guys like THIS turn us away?
If you're like me, like the men who will gather at the top of the hill Saturday, you're tired of being turned away. So many amazing young men who have gone on to proudly represent our school in their lives. Saturday, let there be no turning back. Let no man ready to pay the price be denied.
Rise up and roar as we did long ago, Tigers. Summon the spirit of those who came before us as you grimly slip on your size 16 mutt-kickers and dare PETA to stop the carnage. In the words of Isaiah, it is time for the Sons of Clemson look to the rock from which we were cut and to the quarry from which we were hewn.
And I'm not just talking about the young men who sweat and bleed and hurt on the field. If ever ... EVER ... there was a night that ordered the collective Voice of the Valley into full-throated roar, this is it.
If ever a game demanded intensity and unfailing energy from the students, this is it.
If ever the old fart, the silverback, those who have forgotten just how good it feels to throw your voice and your heart into the fray ... Saturday night is the time to rediscover your youth. It's still there. Find it. Free it.
This game isn't just for this year's team. It is an opportunity to lay waste to Georgia. And any time you have that opportunity, you'd better bring your best General Sherman imitation.
I don't agree with Sherman on many things. On this topic, though, he got it right ... and Clemson would be well-served to listen to a man who had the foresight to burn Columbia to the ground.
Get on the Dawgs early. Run them hard, and when they feel like stopping, run them some more. When they whimper, smack them with a playbook of pain.
Let there be no rest for evil. And when the floor of Death Vally is littered with spewed-up Kibbles N Bits, when there is nothing but the whimpering of curs ... when indeed we have made Georgia howl ... then the world will realize what we already know.
Clemson is back. The Righteous have returned. And #### awaits those who stand before us.
