What political advisor said that was a good thing to say?

Reasoning has to be: "He will lose points in a debate." It is a big gamble to bet that the swing voters don't see through that. Maybe its a bet they have to make.

I think Trump has more to lose than to gain in the debates. It wasn't strong debate performances 4 years ago that got him votes.

Dems normally do: overplaying expected results. Biden clearly has some issue with his cognaetive functions on occasion and would be more apt to gaff in a debate. Trump is more lucid but as you noted, isn't known as the the great debater. I think there could be a backfire by sheer low expectations for Joe. It isn't usually like this, where Pubs put the mark in the scorebook before the home run is hit...that is a Dem trait.

Biden can only hurt himself at this point.
He's not winning any Trumpers over.

intellectual barrel, doesn't mean we shouldn't have them.
We need to see this train wreck and appreciate it for what it truly is: an ugly, naked spectacle... a reflection of our country's current state of chaos and confusion.....a reminder that our politics and sense-making apparatus is irreparably broken.

listen to the media afterward, just listen to the answers during the debate - you can glean a lot of information.

Trump is more likely to cancel debates than Biden.

Trump was a no-show for his first pitch boast and has a record of unassing himself from a situation when it's not going his way - taking his ball and going home. If the first debate doesn't go well for him, look for Trump to pull the plug on the remaining ones and cast blame on the "rigged process" for doing so.
