Talked to Billy first...good conversation discussed sportsmanship, the intense nature of the rivalry and the fact that no laws were broken, nobody got hurt, nobody was slandered...all statements were truthful. We also had a few laughs and I am meeting with both of them tomorrow (at my suggestion) in the spirit of cooperation and mending the fence.
TDP apologized for the hastily written letter but felt it was necessary to get something out yesterday. I told him the apology wasn't necessary, but was accepted. I told him that I had sent him an email last night (that he hadn't received yet because he was at the winter meetings in Jacksonville) explaining my position on sportsmanship and that it is the only point where I diagreed with his first letter issued yesterday. We discussed the intense rivalry and the fact that these kind of good, clean pranks is what college football rivalries ar all about. We also shared a few laughs. TDP is a good person, a lawyer and corporate man who wants what is best for Clemson and is indeed tuned into the rivalry with USC.
In my letter to TDP last night (and again this morning), I also apologized for any problems the billboard may have casued him and the university. I told him at least I didn't get in a plane and drop a live chicken on the USC second baseman (see story in many books on Clemson lore).
I want all of you to respect TDP for what he has to do in representing the university and understand that he had to make some sort of statement as the Gamecocks were in an uproar, even though there may have been some behind the scenes chuckling. He understands the spirit of my intentions as again, good, clean fun...taking a few jabs at our rival and their head football coach.
