THAT Was The Air Raid Offense?

2

Sep 5, 2023, 9:09 AM

How come we never even tried the Air Raid Offense? We started the gem with the same tired offense, running the ball and throwing to the sidelines. Then that is all we did all night, with almost no vertical passing down field at all. We didn't even call the plays to try it! Mike Leach would be embarrassed for us if he was still around.

No, that was the Dabo Raid

As in Dabo raided the playbook and was way to involved in play calling.

Make no mistake about it, that was DABO's offense and it is what you will see as long as Dabo is coach.

This might help some understand what Riley ran @ TCU...

which he calls the Dirt Raid.

The thing is, that didn't look like what we ran last night.

OP asked about the Air Raid, the last time Riley ran it...

Sep 5, 2023, 9:33 AM

appears to be when he played for Mike Leach.

TCU was run-centric, 50/50 type offense last year as well with a lot screen game[wrote about that back in May?], which in turn helps soften the middle as they are forced to sprint to the sidelines - it appeared to be working as Clemson started gashing Duke's middle in the 3rd quarter.

I doubt Dabo would have entertained anyone going the full Mike Leach route.

Another part of it, Duke's defense with so many returners is probably top 1/3rd of the defenses TCU faced last year save UGA, UM & Iowa St[horrible team]. The Big12is was horrific and so were SMU & Colorado on their OOC schedule.

This is not true. See years at SMU***

It is 100% Riley's Dirt Raid...

Sep 5, 2023, 9:52 AM

He was Lincoln's little brother at SMU, not a Broyle's winner and I've no idea what he and Dykes walked into at SMU, but...

In 2020, SMU ran 79 plays per game, 39 were passes, so ~50/50.
in 2021, SMU ran 76 plays per game, 39 were passes, so again ~50/50.

Going by TCU's passing ranking last season is

Sep 5, 2023, 9:36 AM [ in reply to This might help some understand what Riley ran @ TCU... ]

not a good indicator. They lost their starting QB in the very first game and had to retool the offense around Duggan's strengths as a runner.

The previous 2 season at SMU Riley had the 13th and 14th passing offenses in the nation.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dugan threw for 3700 yards, 32 TDs and only 8 interceptions.

Sep 5, 2023, 10:01 AM

It's the breakdown, 50/50, balanced attack, screen heavy, run heavy, which most didn't want to hear coming into 2023.

I still think Dabo was holding back on the Riley playbook hoping we could get by with the first 3 games without it, and then show something completely new to FSU. I could be way off on that but all I saw last night was the same offense I watched all last year.

2024 purple level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't think Dabo was holding back anything.

I just think our offense continues to underachieve.

The problem is we don’t have any real threats for WR’s. You gotta have that Tee Higgins or J Ross or Mike Williams or Martavis Bryant. Not gonna have any real deep threat when Cole Turner (I love him, don’t get ‘‘em wrong) is your best downfield option. We need to go get some WR’s that are some dudes!

You dont need round 1 NFL skill to run a freaking college offense. Teams all over the country are running perfectly capable offenses with less talent than we have.

You are dead on right. Williams is above average but other than possibly him, we have no standout NFL potential talent right now at WR and it's a big problem.

That was the air Raid. You didn't recognize it?
We are just running it with a Dabo wrinkle on it. Dabo wrinkle is don't throw the ball downfield and make sure at least 60 percent of passes are screens.

We can only do so much air-raiding if we don't have any jets.

It's going to take a year or two to get the personnel back to a competitive level. I think Jeff Scott will help in that regard.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think the Raid got Black Flagged last night.
