George Harrison song and video brings back a lot

Dec 11, 2022, 10:40 AM

of memories .I was born in 67 and my brother ( CU alum 81) was born in 57.I was around him a lot .He got us our tickets to our first Clemson game in Sept 75.I was just a kid but grew up listening to late 60s/ early 70s music .I can vaguely remember girls like the one in this video with their long straight hair and watching go go dancers on Rowan and Martin's Laugh In ( BTW the movie "Once Upon A Time In Hollywoo was a great with all its late 6s nostalgia but that's another post ).I thought my fellow T Netters of a certain age would enjoy this and you may have blasted this song in your dorm room .I remember this song as a young kid but it makes me think of things like athletes like Joe Namath , the space program and Apollo rocket launches and drinking gallons of Tang because the astronauts did , big cars that were fast and built like tanks and even the tail end of Vietnam.Hope you enjoy and curious to know what you remember from the late 60s/early 70s
or your thoughts if you're younger and just like the music from then .Definitely was a bittersweet time for Clemson Football.Coach Howard had won ACC Championships in 65 , 66 and 67 but then it was tough sledding until the 74 season when Clemson went 7-4 and was undefeated at home.

Forgot to mention how good college football was then even though Clemson was a goldfish in an ocean. Saturday afternoons with Keith Jackson , usually at a game someplace cold like Michigan or Ohio State!Like I said I was just a kid in the early 70s but I feel very connected to that time .Great music then too!

I have several older female cousins who all wore their hair in the early 70s like the girl in the video, long straight and parted in the middle .I call it the Marsha Brady look ! lol

Concert at Charlie B Ranch August 12 1973

I know from Tnet that some here attended concerts at the Charlie B Ranch outside Seneca in 72 and 73 .The poster is from the concert on August 12,73 and Fleetwood Mac played among other groups .I learned about the concert from an older friend who was there and got more details from old posts on Tnet.

Oh yeah, I went to the concerts at Charlie B's and posted

about it in 2011. Heck, if you google "Charlie B's Outdoor Arena"... my Tigernet post is the top link. It's archived now and none of the scanned ticket stubs still load. But the thread is a good read if you want to know more details. Good times, man. Wish I could go back and do it again...

I'm almost certain I read your archived post years ago .I saw tickets stubs that had been sold on ebay as well .I was 6 in 73 and was down from NYC staying with my mom in whats now our house near Seneca .I didn't know anything about the concerts until maybe 2010 from a guy from Seneca I worked with who was at the concert in August 73.

Curious if you saw Fleetwood Mac at Charlie B's ? Was wondering if Peter Green was still with the band.I think in 73 Chistine McVie was with the band as a keyboardist but she wasn't the lead singer yet.Stevie Nicks joined the next year in 74 I think .

Honestly, I don't really recall seeing Fleetwood Mac...I was

Dec 12, 2022, 11:02 AM

probably there, as I think I caught all the shows at Charlie B's. But unless I can find a stub, or I talk to my HS buddies and somebody remembers it, I can't say for sure. That was a long time ago and my memory is a bit "hazy" on some details, as you can imagine. Also, keep in mind that in 1973 Fleetwood Mac had not exploded yet into international mega-stars. I think they were more popular in the UK as a blues band with Peter Green, but not so much in the USA. So they wouldn't have been one of the bands that I would be excited to see... unlike ZZ Top, James Gang, Foghat, Marshall Tucker, etc. Those I remember.

OK, so I called one of my old HS buddies, and he remembers

that we really enjoyed Fleetwood Mac and were surprised at how good they were. A really tight band. He jogged my memory that it was the band that came on as the sun was setting that evening.

I looked it up... no Peter Green in 1973. The band was in a state of flux, and temporarily broke up a couple months later. From Wikipedia:

"During the 1973 US tour to promote Mystery to Me, Weston had an affair with Fleetwood's wife Jenny Boyd Fleetwood, sister of Pattie Boyd Harrison. Fleetwood was said to have been devastated by this, and could not continue with the tour.[44] Courage fired Weston and two weeks in, with another 26 concerts scheduled, the tour was cancelled. The last date played was Lincoln, Nebraska, on 20 October 1973.[45] In a late-night meeting after that show, the band told their sound engineer that the tour was over and Fleetwood Mac was splitting up."

When that guy I worked with told me about the concerts in 2010 I was very surprised .I was like " So you're telling me that there were these mini Woodstock concerts wayyyyy out here in the country ? " lol .My mom was born and raised in the Seneca area and she would bring me down from NYC for about 2 months each summer and we moved permanently to Seneca from NYC to Seneca in 74.Dont think I am knocking the area its just that when I think back to 1973 the area was still pretty rural but very peaceful and still with pastures and fields .It was hard in 2010 to get my head wrapped around there being this concert series in what was a very quiet area or it seemed quiet to me .I didn't know the town of Clemson and the University even existed until my brother first applied to Clemson in the Spring if 75 ! A lot of that was being 6 in 73 and once we were down here ( pre 74 ) for those 2 months we didn't move much .My mom shopped at Bilo on 123 in Seneca and went went downtown in Seneca to shop for things like clothes or shoes .We would go to Walhalla and occasionally to the State Park in Mountain Rest and that was a big trip. I think very occasionally we went to Garrett's but otherwise I had no idea that was part of Clemson and that was as far as we got all summer .In mid August my uncle would drive us over to Greenville / Spartanburg and we flew back to NY for another 9 months. The difference that time was my mom and dad were already planning to move down permanently ( not sure when I became aware we were moving to Seneca permanently but I was happy about it when I did understand). We came down in August 74 and I started to understand there was a bigger area than Seneca and Walhalla.lol

Some pictures you might like .Clemson about 1969 or 70 ( you can just make the water tower on 123 looking towards Seneca) and my view in 73 from our mobile home where our house is now in Seneca overlooking newly filled Lake Keowee.

Great videos! I call George the Fearless Beatle .John had checked out by 70 .Paul was worried sick if he would be able to survive without John as far as making music .Ringo was resigned to the breakup .It was George who immediately started a solo career. This is something you might like. It's What Is Life but with an animated video added to it .
