The ACC messed up not merging with the Big 12 after UT &OK announced they were leaving

ACC was arguably the 3rd best conference in football, and now has dropped to arguably a distant 4th best conference.

In basketball, they would’ve been the Premier conference.

FSU
Miami
GT
Clemson
UNC
NCST
Wake
Duke
UVA
VT
BC
Syracuse
Pitt
WV
Louisville
Iowa St
Kansas ST
Kansas
OKST
Baylor
TCU
Texas Tech

Can't argue with your logic.

Particularly, after UCLA and Southern Cal went to the Big 10, this should have happened.

Baylor, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, Kansas State and Iowa State have all been ranked pretty regularly. A few of those schools have fielded really good teams(Ok. St and Baylor).

You wonder though if the Big 12 would have laughed at the notion at the time. They likely had Houston, Colorado, Boise State, Memphis, SMU, and Rice on deck as replacements!

But what about "The Alliance"? Did that not turn out to be everything the execs in the conference office sold to themselves? Doesn't somebody, somewhere, deserve to be fired over this fiasco, like they would be in the real world for such incompetency?

Unfortunately the ACC got caught sleeping. I think their only chance would of been a merger with the BIG 12.
In their defense they were still thinking of academics along with athletics. That way of thinking sadly left a long time ago.

Agreed!

Especially the keep it academics part. Which is why W. Virginia never received an invitation. And, they do have a pretty decent fanbase.
UCF same thing! I would have tried to get UCF just to have more Florida kids who would get to compete against each other potentially. Well in the hopes that would be apealing anyway(maybe not; but UCF had/has a solid program and a nice size alumni and steady growning).
Louisiana - Lafayette or Louisiana would be another school that would have been a strategic good get. Memphis most certainly.

As you said, "when thinking in terms of what it meant to be great 50 years ago, no good"! But, trying to stay somewhat competitive in today's CFB landscape, "not good"!

I would add that we NEVER should have agreed to let Notre Dame join unless it was 100%. That was Swoffie Stupid.

Could have just stopped at The ACC messed up.....

Basketball has nothing to do with any of this

Football wise, once you take Oklahoma and Texas out, all your left with is a bunch of meh. Sure you get into some "allegedly" bigger markets, but youve also got a bunch more mouths to feed. There is no saving the ACC and, frankly, there never was.

The ACC is going to end up like the Pac-12 if they wait around until 2036 for the GOR to expire to make any changes.

Everyone is moving to a conference that matches their $$$ viewership. They need to go ahead and let the teams out that want out. It is the only way to save the remaining teams from ending up like Stanford and California.
