Born 3/25/1909 and died on 1/26/1996.

Thanks Coach 4 liking & promoting that famous college football PAW logo, for Howards Rock and for all you personally did to get the Clemson FB Program to where it is today..

from promoting IPTAY across the rural backroads to get promises of $10 donations from poor farmers & citizens..to personally helping to build Howard’s Field, mowing it & even clipping the hedges..

to recruiting some pretty dang good players to our out-of-the way but beautiful campus..to enduring the political crime of having to take your Boys down to Columbia every year until 1960 but still winning more than not..

to putting Clemson on the football map with your earthly public relations & country yarn..to politicking to get our 1st Bowl game..to playing tough football.

exactly 13 years apart.

Howard was 4 years older than Bear Bryant. Bryant was a heavy smoker but they both downed their share of alcohol.

Rest in Peace to both of those old friends who are probably together swapping heavenly lies right now.

"Amen" Well done!!

The Baron was my boss, mentor, and friend.
Nobody else like him.
Thanks for the reminder of this incredible being.

ps Plus, To add that he went to Alabama on an academic scholarship as an english major.
Was president of his freshman, and sophmore classes, member of their
scholastic honor club throughout, and graduated with honors.

Thanks again.

that played in the Rose Bowl which was maybe a first for a Southern team.

Interviewed him couple of times as a student staff sports writer and an impromptu chat after a Spring FB Game Saturday in 1989 and he remained the same over those 25 yrs, called me Buddy and later wrote to sell me a prescription to a weekly sports rag mag he represented so to make $.

He never made much $ and DS’s $10-12 Million a year take would have elicited quite a humorous remark from Frank, for sure.

Howard was an amazing coach in a unique place at an unusual time of football greatness...think of all the great coaches who were peers to FH...Frank did not have all the advantages of schools like Bama, Tennessee or Texas but what he did layed the groundwork for another great coach to make Clemson the special place it is today...hope Frank knows what he nurtured has become!

There is a utube vid of a reporter interviewing Coaches son, Jimmy in Sloan Street Taproom. Jimmy said that in 1969 as AD and head coach he made $19,000 per year for both jobs.. My My has economics changed.
