to make the umpire step into the base path as he was starting his slide!!!

I'm not surprised that the homer announcers want to pretend that the umpire wasn't obstructing the path but the umps should have done the right thing.

although a little surprised that they don't know the rules. What the umpire did was the same as if he had grabbed Purify and held him off the base while the tag was applied.

The officiating crew is supposed to know the rules and call them impartially.

In the end I have always considered that referees are a part of the playing field and from time to time may be an obstacle.
