The Catch

Serious question for the older tigers here. I'm watching SF 49ers play tonight and Al Michaels and the other announcer are saying that the biggest moment in Candle Stick park was Dwight Clark's iconic game winning TD grab from J. Montana over Dallas in the early 80's. Was Clark a total stud in his Clemson days too?

That is correct, but remember that we ran an option offense and did not throw the ball very much.

at Clemson until the Maryland game of his senior year. But evidently he scored one in '77 as well. But he was awesome in that game as it was back and forth until the end and we won 28-24. Watched the game in Littlejohn on closed circuit, as it was at MD (before the age of wall to wall TV coverage) and it determined the conference winner.

Good analysis.

Dwight Clark was steady. But like others have said, Clemson did not throw the ball much. Clemson and Steve Fuller ran the option. Lots of running plays.
The biggest stud while I was at Clemson was Bennie Cunningham. Good hands and it was very hard to bring him down. He was a load.
Glad to see that Dwight Clark is still remembered.

That I have ever seen. She lived a few doors down from me in the apartment complex and she was out of my league.

and how it would be pretty nice to have Dwight Clark in attendance should we make it to the NC game. No doubt it would be well covered by the ABC/ESPN gang.

Great story about why he was drafted

SF scouts came to look at Steve Fuller. Clark happened to be available to run some patterns. And the rest, as they say, is history.

33 receptions and 3 tds while at Clemson.
Much to my surprise, about 12 years ago I walked into Death Valley with my fiancé and there was Clark, as part of some credit card promotion. I signed up for a credit card and instead of a tshirt, I opted for him to sign a SI cover shot picture of THE CATCH that reads, "Best Wishes to ..... Dwight Clark".
He was awesome in the 80's.

In a recent nfl documentary on the 49'ers, the lead in starts with a phone call to Clemson from Bill Walsch to Steve Fuller. The coach wanted to set up a tryout for Fuller. As he walked out the door to go play golf, Dwight Clark answered the phone. When the coach found out Clark was one of Fuller's receivers, he asked him if he could catch some balls from Fuller for his tryout. Walsch liked the way Clark caught the passes and he asked about his status. Did he have any film he could watch. Clark told the coach that he caught 11 passes that season. The coach asked him if he caught more than 1 pass in any game and Clark told him he caught 2 against UNC. Coach looked at those two passes and told Clark that he was going to draft him. During the draft, all the assistant coaches kept telling Walsch not to draft Clark because the could pick him up as a free agent. Walsch said no way and that is how "the catch" became the greatest moment in Candlestick Park.

The Catch happened on Jan. 10th 1982

Clemson won the NC title Jan 1st 1982 and I was born Jan. 13th 1982. That was a great time to be a Tiger and now its clear to me that I was always destined to be a tiger.
