The "glass half empty" fans need to get a grip...

Oct 28, 2013, 10:03 AM

Yes, we got flushed by FSU at home and have looked less than stellar the last few weeks. Regardless, we are in the top 10, we are winning road games we are supposed to win, and we generally do compete in big games, and are starting to win our share. We still need to upgrade our talent in areas (both lines, RB, DB, etc.).

So many fans are talking about Saturday as if we lost. Tajh was hobbled and we still controlled the game. Field goals aren't such a terrible thing. I learned this in our glory years...the 80's. We won a ton of ball games on the most boring ball control offense ever, field goals, playing field position and tough defense. To all of the complainers..be patient and learn to enjoy a win! What fun is it to be a Clemson fan if you constantly fret about conference road wins? Go Tigers!

Ya know, man...

not everybody watches sports the same way.
To some, a W or L is all that is important. That's fine.
But some have a more "technical" mindset when they watch and don't like it when things are sloppy and improvements aren't made week to week.
If you go the the game and say "let's hope we can get a win", and I say "let's see if our Safeties are playing better"...we may leave the same game with different feelings. And that's fine.
You're no more right for being happy with the win than someone is for being unhappy with the performance.

You're right but

Oct 28, 2013, 10:18 AM

being technical does not mean finding all that is bad. Being technical can mean noticing we rushed for almost 250 yards. It can also mean noticing that in the 3 biggest defensive possessions we got an INT in our own end zone and forced two 3 and outs after the opponent getting the ball inside the 20 on fumbles. It can also be noticing that while we struggled in the red zone, our offense did not look bad. We walked the ball down the field all game.
Technical doesn't equal negative.

I can agree with that. Post was not directed at you...

Oct 28, 2013, 10:24 AM

specifically, despite your conscience telling you it was ;)

I'm fine with fans over-analyzing things. I do it too. It bugged the crap out of me that we missed so many first half opportunities for field goals against BC.

You can tell the difference the technical critiques and just plain grouchy negative nellies. The latter are the irrational ones who bug us all the most.

nah, I don't think I've even commented on this game. No offense taken.

I didn't take it as directed at me

I just dislike when some on here rant about pumpers because they think analyzing a game means finding out team's mistakes. If that was how coaches analyzed a game, the players would be so beaten down they would feel like they could nothing right. There are so many bad things even in a 50-0 win if you want to look for them, but everybody just wants to whine about it when it's a 40-27 win.

Oct 28, 2013, 10:27 AM [ in reply to You're right but ]

that's fair and accurate. Completely agree.
But, if someone watched this game with their minds set on seeing improvement at RT or LG or FS...they aren't happy.
If someone wanted to see us get a road win and bid College Park farewell, they raised a glass after the game.

Folks who b1tch about everything are annoying, obviously. There's always good and the bottom line is, it's college kids entertaining us.

and that may have been well & good had they been playing....

Oct 28, 2013, 10:28 AM [ in reply to You're right but ]

a maryland team w/ their 1st stringers in

take our trend of playing poorly vs a "good team" ie FSU or USC and where do we end up????

it's the trend of poor play, seemingly all year leading up to the USC game (which is a MUST WIN this year)that most are upset about

you can afford to have 3-4 turnovers and kick 4 FGs in the red zone vs the BCs, NCSTs,MDs of the world, but as we saw vs FSU you can't do that against a decent team.........and every week the coaches say they'll fix it and it hasn't been fixed.

this is what most fans who aren't "pumpers" feel

Trend of poor play... in big games? In non-big games? Huh? Aren't we on some kind of streak for winning consecutive road games and road games by double digits? Let's see pheebo...the last 4 big games (to me) were USC (loss), LSU (big win), UGA (big win), FSU (bad loss). How is that a "trend of poor play" in big games? To me the trend is we're a good team but certainly not a dominant team. We have to play our best to win big games.

I agree that the new offensive age makes scoring TD's instead of FG's more important, but I would also submit that many a big game are still won on defense and with field goals. Reference the "oft offensively" deprived SEC and their 7 rings in a row if you don't believe me!

This is the biggest problem I have with fans who classify themselves as realist or in this case technical. I love to analyze games but just because you view a game that way does not mean you pick out only the negative aspects. Also many of these same fans fail to see the negatives that opposing teams show on the field. You can read what ever you want into the stats and performance of a game the key is to remain level headed and take the good with the bad.

The forth quarter eased my mind a bit

Oct 28, 2013, 10:41 AM

I admit I was grumbling through he first half. We were the recruiting wise superior team playing a team devastated with injuries and struggled. We were out scored in two quarters. They pulled within 3. Remembering the first Maryland touchdown it just felt at any point we could give up our slim lead.

That's tough to watch. If you were sitting back calm and coolly as a fan, you've not been watching them for very long.

However, the 24-7 run from 6:40 in the 3rd to 5:00 in the 4th eased my mind greatly.

What I can take away from this season is we are still winning when we should and we lost big when a loss was possible (I actually predicted an FSU win, but close Ugh).

In general I am happy. However, I hate having the expectation of loosing to USuc for the 5th time.

Re: The forth quarter eased my mind a bit

Oct 28, 2013, 11:07 AM

Yeah I've only been watching Clemson football since the 70's, so i am a relative newcomer. I was not calm and cool either.

Why "expect" a loss to USC? They have a good team, but so do we. They have been as inconsistent as we have with thier performance.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Fair enough: "Expect a loss" is over stating

Oct 28, 2013, 11:38 AM

Expecting a loss against South Carolina is not really what I meant. However, from 1994 to 2010 I expected to win against USUc and recently it has become an uneasy game.I get much more worried about it than in the past. In the past I was just excited. I guess it "looms" more than in the past. Maybe this is just that a 5 game losing streak is on the line. We can win it certainly but it is going to take a special performance.
