Look, I know this is an unfair characterization of what you're trying to say, but what it is coming across as is that news reports should hold on publishing until trial, on the premise that this is where fact-gathering happens? That's ridiculous.

I would assume that CNN attempted to reach the man or his counsel (if represented at the time) for comment, and was not given any -- or I hope that's the case because if you are accused of a crime you absolutely should not be offering public comment (or talking to the police) except through counsel. CNN also reached out to the counsel for the boy's family, they were available and gave comment. CNN printed what they had because that's exactly what they're supposed to do.

without some frame of reference. With that large a sample size, tell me what you want to say, and I'll find the anecdotes to support it. If you begin with a human characteristic that is universal in all history and places, even if the occurrence is very rare you can guarantee finding them at a rate of, say, one a month. You can then use those to almost any destructive end you want. Statistically, at once a month it never really happens, but you can tell any story you want with them. Can anyone honestly deny that this is happening?

How many times do white people and black people come into contact with each other? Of those contacts, how many people get shot, and under what circumstances? Of those, how many are white shooting black? How many are black shooting white? Answering those questions is actually hard work, and risks concluding what most of us intuitively believe, that is is not very many. So those with agendas use the available anecdotes.

The reaction against such inflammatory reactions is not racially based. It is anger at those who dishonestly pursue their destructive agendas. We are a good, though flawed, culture by almost any measure. We need to be building from that, not tearing it down.
