The Portal and College Football playing field

4

Sep 24, 2023, 8:42 AM

We are watching the death of college football with the transfer portal. With so many great games yesterday and great timing, I got to watch a lot of football. But I also got to "hear" the reality of Portal football from every game. I even heard Mac Brown, while talking on "The Huddle", say, "this kid such a great player, WE got him from East Tennessee State!" Announcers talk of the teams, Colorado, and many, many more having this kid and that kid from the portal, but I was especially interested in the FSU-Clemson game. I don't have any idea how many times I heard, "this player or that player transferred from this University or College", all day long. Funny thing was NOT ONCE did they say that about a Clemson player, it was all about FSU. Now the point, these transfers are like free agents, with no compensation! Even the NFL knows that unrestricted "free agency" would ruin the NFL, just like it's ruining college football. Yes, our Tigers lost yesterday, but not to FSU, they lost to an all-star line up picked by their coach. Not only did FSU benefit from this but it was to the detriment of other schools who lost those players they had invested in.
What do ARMY, NAVY, AIR FORCE and CLEMSON have in common? They are college football teams, the FSU's, Colorado's, Notre Dame's, UNC's, South Carolina's and etc., are professional, or at least semi-professional, ALL STAR teams. I know there are some fans who say, "Coach Dabo should use the portal too" and perhaps he will have to in order to keep up with the times. I for one don't like it, I respect Dabo for putting a "home grown" College team on the field. FSU, could not compete with Clemson playing College Football for the past decade, yet they have "caught up" as the talking heads like to say. No they didn't catch up, they used the uncontrolled rules of the NCAA, to cheat! We may have lost yesterday, but I respect Coach Swinney and the "CLEMSON TIGERS" COLLEGE football team for competing so well against the pros.

Some would argue that we are seeing the revival of college football with the portal. No longer is it us, UGA, Bama et al at the top. Teams like Oregon, FSU and others are on the rise and parity is at a very high level. No longer is it only the rich getting richer. We need to use all of the tools available to have a top notch program and get off our moral high horse.

And those who argue that would be wrong!

These teams recruiting base will soon turn into tampering with other teams best players. Ok it already has. Some poor Temple Rutgers etc. never have a chance of being good every so often. So no there will be about 30 teams and everyone else eventually. Everyone else will be a farm system to the other 30.

The sit a year rule must be brought back for transfers. It is ridiculous and I at some point will stop watching unless there is change.

you do realize Clemson players are being paid too right?

I grew up loving college football because it’s college football.
I don’t like pro football.
I grew up loving Clemson because it’s Clemson.

Dabo’s plan may very well work. I still believe in him.
But if not…I’m willing to go down swinging with him.

The moment Clemson follows the herd and sells out…is the moment I will probably lose interest and find a new hobby.

It's not the death of college football, it's the death of college football teams that don't keep up with the current ability to attract the best talent.

Why does it have to be all or nothing? We don't need to flip the team in the portal, just take a few kids to fill needs.

That's bunk. Very few teams in the country with better talent than Clemson. Over the past 10 years, Clemson's recruiting classes have been ranked in the Top 10 six times. Top 15 nine times. Klubnik, Woods, Vizzina... these guys don't land here without NIL deals. Heck - Chipotle is renaming their Clemson location to Shipotle this week. Clemson has two losses this year - outgaining Duke and FSU significantly in each contest. MENTAL mistakes and an a plainly inexplicable LACK of kicking talent are caused these losses. It's not a talent gap - Duke has 2 four-star recruits on their roster. There is an inability to close the deal with this team, and last year's for that matter. THAT lands squarely at the feet of our $10 million man.

You do realize that Shipotle was a marketing gimmick. They aren’t really renaming the Clemson location.

Marketing gimmick, NIL... whatever you want to call it https://clemsonwire.usatoday.com/2023/09/18/will-shipley-signs-a-nil-deal-with-chipotle-clemson-gets-shipotle/

So, I guess Dabo is the newest version of Robert E. Lee, losing honorably. Winning hearts honoably while losing the games (battles) he was paid to win. Good Lord help us!
