The "Problem" with Success

Sep 26, 2022, 5:12 PM

We are now four games into this wonderful and crazy football season, with our beloved Tigers undefeated at 4-0 with a top-ten gameday matchup looming ahead. We are ranked #5 in the nation, and with a win this weekend have a good chance at making yet another playoff run. DJU finally seems to have regained his confidence, has sharpened his decision making skills, and appears to be the clear leader of the offense. The defense, though hobbled for the past two games, still is filled to the brim with NFL quality talent and looks to return several key starters within the next few weeks. However, it appears that a portion of the tiger fanbase is not as thrilled as I about this season. I spend a fair amount of time browsing message boards and have come across many fans who are already quite pessimistic about where we might end up at the seasons end. The comments range the gambit from "fire the DC" to we will lose 5+ games before it is all said and done. There is even a small group of fans that still believe DJ should not be the starting quarterback. Not only is it disheartening to read and see these comments, but it is also the realization that a portion of the fanbase has forgotten how to be grateful in regards to winning. Though the last 10 years of Clemson football history have been filled with repeated ACC Championship wins, Playoff berths, and National Championships, it has not always been that way. There were quite a few years during my young fan days that I was just happy that we beat Georgia Tech or somehow found a way to defeat Boston College. During those days just making it to the ACC championship game would have been a reason to celebrate and cheer. I know that we have progressed in leaps and bounds since those days, but winning is still not a given and more than ever, a team can lose on any given Saturday. One look at the last few weeks within the landscape will reveal multiple "upsets" that were supposed to be "exhibition" games for several prominent D1 programs. I'm sure those programs would love to be in our current position and have the chance to beat a top-ten program and catapult themselves firmly into the playoff conversation. We as fans must not forget the special position that the team is currently in and realize that not every game will be won by halftime. It is our duty to support the team, cheer loudly, and not forget the mountain we had to climb to have continued success. Let us not become infatuated with the success of previous Clemson football teams, but enjoy and appreciate the accomplishments of the team this season. May our Tigers continue to find ways to win on the field and let the chips fall as they may at the end of the season. Go Tigers, BEAT NC STATE!

Spot on and loved seeing someone else remembers those days. Winning is hard and takes more than most of us know. I currently have two children affiliated with the team (Nutrition and a GA). I would love to see most of these complainers keep up with people who are doing all they can while also going to class and in case of one of them, working another job. I am grateful for our teams, coaches and those who show up to cheer them on. Looking forward to going to every game, home and away, again this year. Go Tigers!

forbidden. Let me help you out here.

Amen brother, I remember those days well... having to eat mystery

meat and "sh!t under a shingle" at Harcombe for a week, then drink warm 2-day old draft beer from some random keg left in a hallway, to chase a couple of ludes. Fire up some spliffs and go cheer on the Tigers! Kids today have it made...

Agree "Mostly"!

I agree with you on what you are saying!

I am one who thinks most Clemson fans aren't on tnet and have not taken on the obnoxious, spoiled, entitled to wins attitude(not your words my words).

I believe most are still just about seeing the Tigers play and "hopefully win"! I know for me; that's still the case.

I remember during the West and Hatfield years we had as good a talent as you would find. Yet, we would lose to say, Duke or N. Carolina.

Getting 18-24-year-olds to get on the same page and want it enough to do all the little things it takes to win isn't easy as you said!
I just think it's most of your online fans who may or may not be actual Clemson fans! I think we have imposters on this board who just try and stir up trouble and make crazy threads in order to keep up the chaos that's likely happening at their "real school they support"!
Coming online to talk Tigers football - I like it. Getting into needless debates about what our hard-working coaches and players aren't doing is not what I think true fans do. ( that bit is just my opinion obviously).
Raising a glass of "ahh-hmmm ahhhh - water" offering some of these posters a peace toast to enjoy the moment! Several teams around the country would have given their coach a promotion if they had won 10 games! We have gotten so spoiled we are wanting to run everybody off if we don't beat teams with ACC patches on their jersey by 3 to 5 td's. They seem to give the coaches a pass on anybody else from the Big 10 or SEC.
So, in closing, take a break from tnet from time to time and get with some real Clemson fans who actually support the team ( win or lose ). Not saying you don't already; just saying if you ever get to where it just gets too obnoxious take a break from tnet. I know this because; I had to do the same thing as I started to feel the exact same way. Actually a few times! Stepping away from tnet helped a great deal!
Winning should be appreciated and celebrated not critiqued to death and complained about because "it not guaranteed to be like that"!

break up into sections or paragraphs. You'll get more readers all the way through. I didn't make it very far.

Valid points. The old saying is you have nowhere to go but down.

Expectations are completely different now.

After winning a National championship, Dabo said,” The best is yet to come “.

I just want people to be honest with me.

He didn't say we would win more Nattys. Beating Bama 43 to 16 is about as good as it gets.

Yep!

Only thing that would have been better is beating Michigan like that or worse! HRT - does not care for Michigan.
