The "Thinning Of The Herd" 10/23 Edition

Oct 23, 2022, 8:08 AM

Year 5 of me doing my weekly public service to anybody out there who believes there will be more than 4 undefeated teams at the end of the year vying for a place in the College Football Playoffs. It won’t happen, despite each year worry and angst are abound with people wondering if we will have a decision to make among undefeated teams come playoff time!

The inevitable will happen….it’s called “the thinning of the herd” and I’ll post it each Sunday to help ease those of you that have this annual “fear”.

Recap Of Last Week
October just keeps on doing its thing. Going on the road continues to prove to be a challenge for those trying to avoid being gobbled up. UCLA, Ole Miss, and Syracuse all got thinned…all on the road.

Our number of undefeated teams has shriveled to 6 even before the final weekend of October.

Next Week: Guaranteed Thinning Will Take Place
No undefeated teams play each other next week, so there is no guarantee our magic number will decrease….but don’t let that prevent you from reading on below

"Upset Alert”
Undefeated Ohio State travels to Happy Valley to face Penn State in a nooner. This may be the only test left for the Buckeyes until Michigan comes calling. But it is on the road…and we know what has happened recently to undefeated teams on the road vs. ranked teams…

Undefeated TCU travels to West Virginia. On the road…..always a test...always a possibility to get thinned.

Undefeated Georgia vs. Florida in the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party. Can Florida win? Let’s just say stranger things have happened in Jacksonville when these two collide.

Will Keep Winning....For Now
Clemson has a bye week.

Undefeated Tennessee will host a ranked Kentucky team. It was a close call to put them above on “Upset Alert”, and I wonder if Kentucky can grind the ball on the ground and limit possessions by UT?

Undefeated Michigan hosts Michigan State. Sparty is not good…and they already used their whole bag of tricks a few years ago in the Big House on that crazy blocked punt for a TD as time expired.

Final Thoughts:
With two undefeated teams going on the road and one playing at a neutral site, it’s hard for me to believe there won’t be more carnage next week. My guess…1 more falls from the throne and when the sun rises on October 30th we will be down to 5 undefeated teams. And we have not even entered November...when things always get interesting.

Every year we see the same ###### from national media (especially ESPN).

September: Let's over-hype some of the tier 2 and tier 3 SEC teams so they're unjustifiably ranked in the top 10.

October: "Could the SEC get 3 teams into the CFP? What about 4?!!? Could they get 4 in? It's possible!"

November: The PAC-12 and Big 12 have imploded, zero chance for a playoff appearance. Clemson ain't played nobody. Winner of Ohio State-Michigan gets in. Best 2 SEC teams probably get in unless some graduate level quantum math scenario happens.

The herd will be thinned until we see 1 or 2 undefeated teams and everybody gets to argue over the 3rd and 4th spots in the CFP.

The race to be the prettiest 1 loss team is heating up

Oct 23, 2022, 8:31 AM

And there may be no better team in position to be the prettiest, if they can win out, as Wake Forest.

Early season loss to Clemson in double OT. Won't lose in championship game because they won't play in one. They could pull a back door entry into playoffs like Bama has done a few times.

Except they are not Bama and won't be treated as such....

However...

Oct 23, 2022, 8:48 AM

I though Bama was a bit vulnerable after the Texas game. Texas A&M nearly got the win on the last play of the game. The Tennessee loss (to me) seemed inevitable. They've got LSU, Ole Miss and Auburn left on the schedule. And I'm telling you, don't be shocked if Bama loses one of those 3. LSU could very well end up being the SEC West representative in the SEC Championship Game. That same LSU team that just beat "#7" Ole Miss by 25, but somehow lost to the 5th best team in the ACC Atlantic in FSU. But let's not talk too much about that.

Will be a wild ride for sure!
