Home Depot Ryobi Electric Mower Customer Service HELL

3

Jul 31, 2023, 1:49 PM

So Greenr bought an electric mower from Home Depot in late March. Didn't really use it until May. Go to start it up about 3 weeks ago and NADA. Nothing. Won't start. Switch batteries, nothing. Tried everything I can think of. Ended up weedeating my entire yard after we got home from the beach. Then hired someone to cut it last week.

Called Home Depot store. Nothing they can do, I bought it online.
Called Home Depot online help. Nothing they can do, store should have helped, but looks like it is under warranty with Ryobi, just need to contact them.
Cannot get Ryobi on the phone.
Ryobi service center is just up the road though, call them last week. No answer, machine says too busy to answer.
Call service center again today. They answer and tell me they are actively trying to get out of the Ryobi repair service center because they get stuck with unpaid repairs. Also, there is a 3 month wait to get anything done and parts are non-existent.
Call Home Depot online help again, cannot even find the right person to talk to.
Call Ryobi help again, leave message to call me back, seems like they aint calling back.
Next closest service center is basically in Raleigh, nah...not going that route.

What do, Jounge? Buy something else? It wasn't SUPER expensive, but I could have hired someone to do it for me by spending $400 in less than 3 months of actual use.

Did you at least put the milk in the freezer

Turn off and back on again?

Clean lint trap?

Blow on it really good?

I would try google, assume you already have, you're a smart guy, right? You can't be the first person this has happened to.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Take them to small claims court.

Jul 31, 2023, 1:56 PM

They won't show up, so you'll win by default. Then you just gotta collect that sweet cashish.

Or you can hotwire one of the riding mowers they got parked out front and ride off into the sunset.

If your lawn is small enough to cut with weed eater can you

An old rusted up one from grampa's shed tho, hell nah.

have pretty good reviews.

The one I have I don't think they sell here anymore (Brill).

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I won't tell you what to do.

1

Jul 31, 2023, 2:00 PM

I will tell you that in your situation I would start with testing the charger then the batteries. I would find the electrical schematics online and try to troubleshoot the wiring including the ground on the motor.

I have seen where an idiot painted a part then another idiot use painted metal as a grounding point.

It could be as simple as the charger or the maroons at Ryobi leaving the brushes out of the motor.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpgringofhonor-clemsontiger1988-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What I would do is pretty simple.

4

Jul 31, 2023, 2:05 PM

Go back to any of the numerous threads in the past where I said Ryobi was pretty much junk, based on several tools of theirs I owned simply dying on me the way yours just did, and buy Ego or Makita instead.

Now for more practical help, go buy a new one, stick your old mower back in the new one's box and return it, saying it doesn't work, and keep the new one.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And if you decide you want a do-over on the brand

Jul 31, 2023, 2:23 PM

The Egos are great, but they are pretty much limited to yard tools. If you think you want to get some common batteries across all your tools (yard and power tools), this would be my rec (Made the same rec to No Intro and he loves the tools)

This kit regularly goes on sale for $399.

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Makita-21-in-18-Volt-X2-36-Volt-LXT-Lithium-Ion-Cordless-Walk-Behind-Self-Propelled-Lawn-Mower-Kit-with-4-Batteries-5-0-Ah-XML08PT1/312938313?irgwc=1&cm_mmc=afl-ir-10451-483420-&clickid=SDV28x2iPxyPWJWUS5TJ82YBUkFw8UShMxcpUg0

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

can't say about their mowers but I just got a Makita

1

Jul 31, 2023, 3:08 PM

weedeater and it's great, just like the other several Makita tools I've bought.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You get the 18 or 36 (18x2)?

1

Jul 31, 2023, 3:20 PM

Got the 36 weedeater and it's BA.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

36. Model XRU15Z

Jul 31, 2023, 5:58 PM

Consumer Reports picked it best.
I've got a fair amount of weedeating on my 2.6 acre mountain estate, which has much exposed rock in the far back, and a steep hill into a ditch at the road, plus normal trimming. Replaced a Husqvarna 223L 2 cycle, which has been a beast. Makita is not quite as stout, but stout enough. And quieter.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Nice...that's the one I have.

1

Jul 31, 2023, 6:09 PM

Just an FYI, I changed the head to an Echo speed loader, and it's much easier to load line. Also the rock guard is a joke it's so small......bought this one and it fits (had to get slightly longer bolts).....I can actually use it again with shorts on without destroying my shins. https://www.amazon.com/Makita-191B54-1-Cutter-Debris-Shield/dp/B09RPN6RFR/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

thanks, I read reviews that mentioned changing the head.

Jul 31, 2023, 6:13 PM

And I'll check out the larger Debris Shield. On the Husqvarna, I moved it around the clock to where it actually deflected grass better. I don't know why that's a hard task for trimmer engineers.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I've done that.

Jul 31, 2023, 3:48 PM [ in reply to What I would do is pretty simple. ]

I have to get really hurt and angry to do it but ten dollars can really pisz me off.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpgringofhonor-clemsontiger1988-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Can you not return it?

3

Jul 31, 2023, 2:05 PM

Maybe they are giving you grief as it is pretty well past the purchase date, but just go up in there all Karen like and make a scene. Get store credit if you need to, you know you will spend it.

EDIT: Or what Obed said

Jul 31, 2023, 2:16 PM

What you need to do is purchase a Ryobi electric assault rifle and go shoot up the Home Depot with it. You what they say...an eye for an eye is better than two eyes in the bush.

find an employee to take your vengeance out on. Granted, if you moved quick enough and had enough batteries Home Depot seems to hire the most apathetic people they can find. Gun shots probably wouldn't be enough to get them to look up from their phones.

I have one of them-

1. Make sure the handle is fully extended and both sides are locked

If you did those things and it still won’t start, then I’m out of ideers
