The perception that college athletes aren't good students.

Jan 28, 2013, 7:23 PM

I go to The Citadel. I'm not an athlete. However, I do have a number of classes with athletes, many of them on the football team. I can attest to the fact that all of the athletes in these classes are good students. In fact, some of them are very good students. Our back-up QB is in my Army class and he is probably the best at land navigation, terrain analysis, battle concepts, and a load of other Army stuff.

I used to think that surely athletes probably got all kinds of strings pulled for their education. Then I came here and I found out that the notion simply isn't true. Yes they are required to go to tutoring and study halls but it is a higher quality then what I get at the Citadel Writing and Learning Center. So don't get it wrong like I did peeps. Rant over.

Go Bulldogs and Go Tigers!

Of high profile star athletes that have great athletic ability but have as much academic potential as I do to be an NFL quarterback. Most are true STUDENT athletes but the one and dones and afroamerican studies majors distort the view of the rest.

You know you've raised a real tiger fan when you ask your son what he wants his cub scout pinewood derby car to be and he says a Tiger!

Well that settles it!***

I'm not disagreeing with you, but athletes at schools like the Citadel are a little different than athletes at most major programs. Again, I'm not discrediting student athletes, but it's impossible to generalize them in either way.

There's nothing else to do at the Citadel besides study.***

I have a good friend who says that's the only way he was able to get a degree. Said he knew that if he would have gone somewhere else, he wouldn't have been able to overcome the distractions.

Depends on the athlete in particular and where they go you can't tell me that Clowney and Jungle boy are good students haha

Based on standardized testing scores ...

Jan 28, 2013, 9:46 PM

the general student population is stronger than football & other athletes ... on test scores alone, alot of the athletes wouldn't get a sniff at college.

sorry you drank too much NCAA kool-aid.

Yes but The Citadel is a far cut above S.Car.***
