Setting aside that I also don't understand the conservative obsession with this stuff...

One's gender identity does not necessarily have anything to do with who one is sexually attracted to. Once you understand that, no explanation is necessary. This is why books need to be left in school libraries - so people understand these concepts.

I'll even give you a personal example in hope that it helps to clear this up. A friend of mine for almost forty years is a trans man. (Born with lady-parts but ultimately went through surgery.) When we were in our early twenties, and she was stripping her way through college, she would say (I thought joking) she was a gay man in the body of a woman. Her boyfriend certainly heard her say this and clearly had more intimate knowledge of her sexuality than I ever did. They got married. About ten years into the marriage, she went through the transition. They are still married today and seem perfectly happy. Now, I suppose, one would call them a gay couple. It's not a big deal. I'd say the extent of my reaction was, "I guess s/he wasn't joking after all."
