Said it Saturday morning and caught crap for it. AP poll doesn’t mean squat. If you’ve watched other teams around the country there’s no doubt about it.

They are definitely talented. Objectively, one statistical model does not agree with them being top 20 though. Under this model, Clemson slots as the 29th best roster and 27th in overall performance. While the offensive production is just outside of the top 20 (21st) relative to all other schools, the defensive production is ranked 54th.

Now, it does not mean this is the end-all-be-all of statistical models, as there are pros and cons to any statistical model. In general, the benefit of this model is that it yields measures of team production (offensive, defensive, and overall) that take into account multiple factors of performance on the court. Subsequently, the roster rank is a by-product of the model, which the statistician notes is only a crude ranking based partly on the individual performance of the players on the team.
