They are not joining a league in football, they don't need one. They do however need a conference for all other sports. Adding Stanford, Cal, SMU keeps the league afloat with enough teams who are competitive in other sports. Wake would remain, Duke likely, Cuse, BC, add a UConn and the other PAC teams if the ACC football schools bolt, even 7-8 of them, and you still have a representative league in all sports except football
ND, WF, Duke, Cuse, BC, Stanford, Cal, SMU, Or St, Wasu, UConn, heck, SD St, S. Fla., maybe even GT
National footprint, good basketball, other sports covered, football still independent and rich. Media contract decreases, but ND doesn't care, football is still rich

This is exactly right...no other conference will take them as a partial member...at least the SEC and BIG wont..:so they need the ACC to stay intact so they will neber have to join a conference in football...they dont want to go back to full independent status because if the other sports...so if the ACC disbands then they will have 3 options
1) independent fully in all sports 2) partial member of Big 12 if they would agree to that 3) join BIG or SEC as a full time member!!!

Neither the SEC, B1G or Big XII will accept them as the

ACC does with the everything but football membership. Not happening. So they are looking at the AAC or CUSA should the ACC give up the ghost. THEY DO NOT WANT THAT! Would be insulting to them to be in a league with UTEP. Big East would fit for hoops, but lack many other sports, so no fit there.
ND has football 100% taken care of, but the rest of their sports are in jeopardy should the ACC completely vanish. A football diminished ACC is still a good league in other sports, and that's good enough for ND.

(Even though it appears the expansion talk is dead)
B10 is already rumored to be going to a 10-game conference schedule in FB. If true, not only will this potentially limit games against current B10 schools down the road, but puts their long-standing rivalry w/ USC in jeopardy. This affects their scheduling, as the Irish strive to have a schedule with national reach. Should the SEC expand to a 9-game schedule, then that narrows down options further.
An ACC with a West Coast presence would benefit the Irish with maintaining a schedule that reaches from coast to coast.

That's likely part of the equation as well

they need a schedule in football. With the Cal schools and SMU, they keep a schedule that includes fertile recruiting grounds and have 5 guaranteed games to go along with there ongoing games with the likes of Navy. From some I've read, NBC really wants some B1G opponents on the schedule as they draw ratings, however, FOX controls the B1G.

Nailed it. ND did the same thing with the Big East when the ACC was looking to raid that conference. ND doesn’t care about the ACC. They just need a conference for their other sports so their fb team can stay independent.

Never cared for ND. Too good to have joined the conference full time. Makes me feel they thought they were doing the ACC a favor by showing up for 5 games a year, and now sounds like we have been the only taker for their other sports and indeed were indeed doing them a favor.

but ND wants it's prestige upheld. With a football weak ACC you'd still have Dook, WF, Cuse, BC, and possibly Stanford and Cal. That's fine with them.
UTEP, UTSA, Memphis, South Alabama and the likes, not so much

If the remaining power conferences STOP scheduling ND then the problem will be solved. ND will have no choice but to join a conference. I think they will as they grow tired of watching ND take a BYE in conference championship game week in this new playoff format.

NBC desperately wants a decent schedule. They really want B1G games. FOX and CBS could care less what NBC wants. ESPN is caught in the middle with the ACC rights.
