Really looking forward to the baseball season.

Agree. I haven’t been this excited for Clemson baseball in years.

I think this guy is the guy for Clemson to win in Omaha! As long as he doesn’t let Jack mess with the kids heads too much! Jack and Ray Tanner had polar opposite coaching styles. Ray Tanner was 4–0 against Clemson led by Jack in Omaha. It was Jack’s coaching style that prevented Clemson from having two titles. Because we clearly had the best team in the country both of those seasons.

The more I read about Bakich, the more I like him.

Good article, David.

Baseball man, if you win 60% of your games and especially win at the right time you are a hero. Thats why 60+ games a season is dumb and 167 games in pros is even more dumb. You can lose 10 in a row and still lead the conference.

The math doesn’t check out. That would be only 18 games a season.

A quick Google search shows Bakich’s record was 328–216 at Michigan.

I'm excited about Bakich but he put himself in a box

Feb 12, 2023, 8:20 AM

He says this is the best team he has had neck down. All he has to do is get mind right. Basically he boxed himself in and says they will make the CWS with his best team ever. If he does not make it, there will be a lot of poo-poo-img!

I think he could be great based on his past and current speeches. I hope he performs as he expects. Go Tigers!

It’s usually good to have players pretty good from the neck UP too! Is he saying his players aren’t bright enough ???

I am sure he is saying baseball IQ. But whats kind of strange is he says he has great talent but not best knowledge for baseball. Is this his way of saying that the previous coaches were not great at teaching the game?? Praises the talent but not the baseball knowledge. I wonder if that explains our lack of on base percentage. Our lack of turning bases vs trying home runs every pitch. There is a lot of wonder in his statements? I home he shows me how knowledge leads to wins!

I agree with you. There are numerous small things in baseball that can help a player develop if he is made aware of this. Something so simple as your position in the batting box can turn outs into hits!

First place to start is the strikeouts. The past few years have been terrible in regard to strikeouts. Players swinging for the fence way too much. I'm sure it might take a few games to get it out of their system.

Monte had bought into the swing angle/swing for the fences approach that is so prevalent in baseball today. The new coach is saying that home runs and individual batting averages will not be the focus of this team. The only stat that really matters in Team baseball is wins. Striking out while swinging for the fence is selfish baseball. Throttling back your swing for a Sac fly, isn’t sexy, but it scores runs and helps win games. I am a long time Clemson baseball fan and I am excited to see this team play.

Sounds like we will see more small ball and base running management.

This was a problem created by the CWS

Feb 12, 2023, 5:49 PM

The old Rosenblatt stadium in Omaha was a home run hitters ball park plus all the wind out in Omaha. That led to LSU and some other SEC teams that were loaded with powerhitters dominating the College World Series. Of course, everybody started playing power ball thinking that’s how you win the CWS.

The new stadium has the same dimensions, but the outfield walls are not as high and it’s oriented in a way such that during the CWS you don’t always have stiff winds blowing out. The new stadium does not reward power as much as Rosenblatt stadium. At least that’s my understanding. I could be wrong, but seems like with the new stadium you can’t go in simply swinging for the fences and win a championship.

Jack had two teams that should have won the CWS, but he didn’t have the temperament to win a championship. Both times we ended up losing two games in a row to South Carolina and games that were full of errors and middle mistakes. Those teams were not ready for that. Khalil Green had more errors in those two games against South Carolina then the entire rest of the season and playoffs combined.

Agreed. Put the ball in play and advance the runners. The last few years they would almost always strikeout with 2 strikes on the batter. Looking forward to the season.
